Frank X. Lauterbur, age 88, passed away on November 20, 2013 at Parkcliffe Communities. He was born in Cincinnati, OH on August 8, 1925 to Frank and Wilhelmina Spellacey Lauterbur. Frank was a 1943 graduate of the University of Detroit High and attended Oberlin College as part of the Marine Corps V-12 program. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II. Frank received a bachelors degree from Mount Union College and later a masters degree from Kent State University. His coaching career included Kent State, Army, University of Pittsburgh, University of Iowa and pro-teams, Baltimore Colts, Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks. Most notably, the head football coach and athletic director of the University of Toledo that had three undefeated seasons and 35 straight victories. His career came full circle when he came back to Toledo as a scout . Coach Lauterbur was inducted into the Varsity T Hall of Fame in 1983 and the Mid-American Conference Hall of Fame in 1990. He retired in 1993. Frank enjoyed fishing, hunting and traveling the world extensively. He treasured his time with his family and friends, especially his grandsons and was a member of Little Flower Church. He is survived by his children, Mary Lauterbur, Fran Jim Denny , Carol John Philyaw and Frank Lauterbur and grandsons, Jeff and Ryan Philyaw. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, who passed away in 2006. Family and friends may visit at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave., west of Corey Rd. on Sunday, November 24, 2013 from 4 to 9 pm. Prayers will begin at the funeral home at 10:30 am on Monday followed by Mass of the Resurrection at 11 am at Little Flower Catholic Church, 5522 Dorr St., Toledo, OH. Burial will be private in Sidney, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lauterbur Scholarship Fund in memory of Frank Lauterbur, P.O. Box 586, Toledo, OH 43697-0586.
