Frances Simon

Frances L. Simon, 94, of Toledo, passed away Thursday, October 4, 2007, in Maumee. She was born in Bowling Green, Ohio, on November 30, 1912, to Stanley and Alice Lanker Coveney. She was a 1930 graduate of Libbey High School where she participated in athletics plus other school activities. In 1933 she was elected President of the Womens Athletic Association at The University of Toledo and in 1934 received her Bachelor of Arts in Education. Frances married Robert Simon in 1936 the same year she began graduate school at Ohio State University. Jones Junior High in Toledo is where she began her teaching career in 1938 and later transferred to Springfield Schools in Holland where she became Guidance Counselor and Director of Guidance after receiving her Masters of Education in Guidance and Counseling from The University of Toledo. After 25 years of service in the Springfield School System, she retired in 1977. Frances felt that her most unexpected surprise and humbling experience came in 1978 when the Springfield High School Chapter of the National Honor Society was renamed the Frances L. Simon Chapter. Her long list of memberships include: D.A.R. 50 year member, First United Methodist Church of Sylvania, Samagama Society of Presidents, US Daughters of 1812-Peter Navarre Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Delta Sorority 50 year member and 50 year member of U.T. Alumni Association. She is survived by her sons, Robert Carol and John Karen; 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren and two sisters, Phyllis Myers and Leontine Jacobs. Her husband, Robert preceded her in death in 1984. Visitation will be held Sunday 3-8 p.m. and Monday 1-8 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. west of Corey Rd.. Funeral Services will be Tuesday 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park. The family suggests memorial contributions to Frances L. Simon Chapter of National Honor Society Robert E. Simon Memorial Scholarship Fund at Springfield High School or Friendly Center.
