Fern Miles

January 9, 1926 — July 26, 2012

MILES Fern Mayme (Shaneck) Fern Mayme, born into this world on January 9, 1926, to Ferdinand and Dehlia Shaneck, passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday, July 26, 2012. She grew up in Jerusalem Township east of Toledo, Ohio, as the 7th of nine children. She attended Jerusalem's original one room school house, the then-new Jerusalem School, and graduated from Clay High School in 1943. After graduation and during WWII, she worked as a chemist testing fuel for the military. During the war, she stayed in touch with a friend-turned-Marine she met roller skating when she was 13. Jack Miles from Oak Harbor turned out to be the love of her life. He served beyond the war as a China Marine and upon his return they were inseparable. They were married August 3, 1946, and were married for 64 1/2 years until Jack passed away December 6, 2010. They lived in Jerusalem Township on Corduroy Road where they raised their three daughters. They retired to Arizona and lived in Sun Lakes for 25 years, where they were actively involved with the Roadrunners RV Club, the Boys and Girls Club, their church, and their neighborhood. Fern loved going to Diamondback baseball games. In Ohio, she was an active member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church and was there for everyone who needed a ride, a hand, or just a hug. Fern was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jack; her parents, Ferdinand and Dehlia Shaneck; her brothers, Howard, Robert, and Willard, and her sisters, Genevieve, Ruth, and Shirley. She is survived by brother, Gary (Sue) Shaneck; sister, Audrey Weis; daughters, Christine (Tom) Moore, Jacque (Tom) Keller, and Michelle (Pete) Emch; grandchildren, Brad (Kerry) Moore, Stephanie (Rob) Fulop, Andrew (Janell) Keller, Sarah (Ryan) DeLauter, Ben (Sara Collins) Emch, and Kristen (Alex) Chernyak, and great-grandchildren, Daniel, Katherine, Buddy, Madeline, Jackson, Grant, and Jocelyn. She adored her many nieces and nephews. She was pure love; a mom, a chef, a chauffeur, a fun storyteller and memory keeper, always there when you needed her! Memorial visitation will be Thursday, August 2, 2012, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hoeflinger-Bolander Funeral Home, 3500 Navarre Ave., Oregon. A memorial service will be held Friday, August 3, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 20 S. Yondota Road, Curtice, Ohio 43412 (corner of Seaman and Yondota Roads).
