Fadwa Fudge Haney Skaff, 83, was surrounded by her children and brother when she went to be with her Savior on Sunday, October 7. Due to the effects of dementia, she resided at Sunset Village for the last 10 years. The daughter of Michael and Josephine Haney, Fadwa graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1947 and the University of Toledo in 1951. She taught Home Economics at Raymer Elementary and Waite High School. While teaching she met her future husband, fellow teacher George Skaff. At the urging of their students, they married in 1957. She retired to raise her family and became an active community volunteer. Fadwa was a founding Board member of the Arthritis Foundation of Northwest Ohio and served on the Board of the UT Alumnae Association. However, her primary focus was on her childrens school, her sorority, and her church. At Old Orchard School she was president of the Mothers Club and volunteered as head of the school library for 13 years. Fadwas affiliation with Alpha Omicron Pi began as a college student with a tight-knit group of friends and lasted throughout her life. She loved mentoring younger women, and served in leadership positions at the local, regional, and international level. A strong advocate of the Greek Life experience, she was City PanHellenic President. In 2001, she received the International Mullen Award for lifelong service to AOII. She was raised at St. Elias Orthodox Church; upon her marriage she joined St. George Orthodox Cathedral and raised her family there. She taught Sunday School for over 40 years, was active in the Mothers Club, and served as President of the Ladies Benevolent Society. Affectionately known as Fudge to all her family and friends, she was characterized by her optimism, warmth, friendliness and infectious laugh. She had a quiet but strong faith. Fadwa was preceded in death by her husband, George, Sr., her parents, siblings Shirley and Jackie, and Franklin. She is survived by her children Cynthia Skaff Rob Fredrick, MD, George, Jr. Lori, and Kathleen Skaff; grandchildren Jodi and George Skaff III; brother Michael; brothers-in-law Raymond Sherry Skaff and Emil Darah; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. on Wednesday from 3-9 PM where Trisagion Services will be held at 8 PM. Funeral Services will be held Thursday at 11 AM in St. George Orthodox Cathedral 3754 Woodley Rd. Toledo. Interment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Donations can be made to St. George Orthodox Cathedral, St. Elias Orthodox Church, Alpha Omicron Pi Foundation, or the charity of the donors choice. The family would like to thank the Overmeyer staff at Sunset Village for their loving care. Their kindness to all of us will never be forgotten.
