Evan Albert Huber, age 81, of Oregon, Ohio passed away on Tuesday, May 03, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family after battling lung cancer, being called home on his brother Skip’s birthday.
He was born on December 10, 1940, at his home in Toledo, Ohio to Clarence and Corinne (Klingler) Huber. Evan attended Central Catholic High School and was a former member of St. Mary’s and Sacred Heart Catholic Church(es). On August 10, 1979, he married Karen (Gallaher). Together they raised two daughters, Meghan and Erika. They always put family first. They created family traditions in all the little and big things they did together. Such as opening one gift on Christmas Eve that was always pajamas and the nightly rituals where everyone was reading in bed. Then in the morning, he would share a joke or a story that we would call a knee slapper or an all-nighter because he had to have stayed up all night thinking it up. They modeled hard work, family first, and “keeping your nose clean” which was Dad’s way of saying “stay out of trouble.”
Dad loved to make family memories and moments together usually revolved around water and fishing but always involved fun and shenanigans. Over the years the family got together in Port Clinton, the UP, Indy 500 races, Black Lake, northern Minnesota, Lake Erie, and South Bend to root for the Fightin’ Irish. He even initiated a trip on an Alaskan Cruise where he chose to go zip-lining and glacial lake fishing.
Over his lifetime Evan acquired quite the number of nicknames- Edd, Rivers, Rivs, Fonz, Uncle Ted, and Poppa Fonz to name a few. Each name has its own unique story usually involving Evan’s great sense of humor, easy-going attitude, and calm demeanor. Always a jokester, Evan famously got in trouble in school for not writing JMJ (Jesus, Mary, and Joseph) on the top of his paper. Instead he wrote TSW for the greatest baseball player that ever played, “The Kid”, the Red Sox hitter, #9, Theodore Samuel Williams.
Two things Evan enjoyed most in this world were fishing “up north” and watching the Red Sox. He spent many weeks in northern Minnesota on the great quest for northern pike with the fishermen in the family. Always precise with his crafts, he made beautiful wooden gifts for his family such as gigantic lawn decorations, bookcases, and even a cat condo. He loved trains and spent years creating a model train town that took up half of the basement. Evan was employed over the years at Villa Brothers Concrete, Bernard Engraving, Toledo Merchants, Foodtown, Seaport Automotive, and Cardinal Stritch High School. He was able to work for and with many family members at these jobs over the years, which was very important to him.
Evan is survived by his loving wife Karen and children, Meghan Skomer (Allen) and Erika Morreale (Carlo), grandchildren, Casey Skomer, Jacob Skomer (Kendal), Mina Skomer; siblings Robert Huber and Donna Titsworth (Richard), in-laws Kenneth Gallaher (Eileen), Patrick Gallaher Jr. (Linda), Jeffrey Gallaher (Elizabeth), Carroll Jennison (James), Patti Clark (Tim), Robert Clark Jr. (Christy) and Maria Andrews (Gordon); many nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Corinne Huber; brothers, Edward Huber (Doris) and Lawrence “Skip” Huber (Mary Jane); sister-in-law Susie Huber; mother and father-in-law, Rita and Robert Clark, brother-in-law, Michael Clark and many other close family members.
The family would like to thank the Mercy Health Oncology Department, Dr. Nauman Shahid and his staff for being so wonderful and accommodating to both Evan and Karen. In addition to Shelley and Dean Hillman.
“Hey, Dude!” His life will live on through his large family and the stories they share with laughter and a toast in his honor. We love you, Fonz.
