Ervin L. Apling

Ervin L. Apling, 89, of Oak Harbor, passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky, Ohio. He was born March 3, 1922, in Carroll Township, Oak Harbor, Ohio, the son of Milton and Mary Humphrey Apling. On October 27, 1942, he was inducted into the armed service and was with the 4th Armored under General Patton when overseas. His individual awards were five Battle Stars, Certificate of Merit and Good Conduct medal. On November 24, 1945, Ervin received a medical discharge at Station Hospital, Indiantown Gap military reservation, Pennsylvania, and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, a member of the John A. Fader American Legion Post #114, V.F.W. Post #8732, and St. Johns Ev. Lutheran Church, all in Oak Harbor. On November 27, 1946, he married Gwendolyn Sis Apling in St. Johns Ev. Lutheran Church. He worked 21 years at the Erie Army Depot in Lacarne and Crescent Mfg. in Fremont for 10 years. In addition to his wife of 65 years, Sis, he is survived by two daughters, Sue Ann Jones and Mary Lou Mike Stolz, one son: Robert Kathy Apling, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, two sisters, Ada Peters of Marblehead, Ohio, and Norma Mitch Anderson of Port Clinton, Ohio. Ervin was preceded in death by his parents, infant siblings, Emerson and Mary Apling, brothers, Wilson and Albert Apling, and sister, Wilma Fillmore. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m., Friday, July 22, 2011, in the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, Oak Harbor. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, July 23, at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Oak Harbor. Memorial contributions for Ervin may be given to St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church or to the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky, Ohio.
