Ernestine Jenkins was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend who passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026, at the remarkable age of 100.
Born on April 11, 1926, in Jacksonville, Florida, to the late Lee Ernest and Frankie Mae Grant-Williams, Ernestine carried the warmth, strength, and grace of her Southern roots throughout her life. These qualities, along with her humility, dedication to others, and kindness, were instilled in her by her loving grandmother, Amanda Williams, who raised Ernestine and her two sisters. At an early age, Ernestine joined Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church, where she enjoyed participating in Sunday School and the Youth Department. She attended public schools in East Jacksonville, Florida, affectionately known as "Out East," and graduated from Stanton High School.
Over the years, her life's journey took her to Brooklyn, NY, Philadelphia, PA, and later Sylvania, OH, where she continued to build lasting memories with family and friends.
Ernestine shared a beautiful love story with her devoted husband, Warren Jenkins. Together, they enjoyed 73 years of marriage, creating a lifetime of cherished memories before Warren's passing in 2021. Their enduring partnership was a testament of commitment, faith, and unconditional love.
A talented seamstress, Ernestine possessed a remarkable gift for sewing. At the age of 21, she worked as a seamstress in the world-renowned Garment District in New York City. She passionately crafted clothing for her family and was especially proud of the many beautiful wardrobes and choir robes she created over the years. Her skill, creativity, and attention to detail were evident in every stitch.
Professionally, Ernestine served as a receptionist at the Philadelphia Institute, where she was known for her warm spirit, professionalism, and genuine care for others. Her compassionate nature extended beyond her career, as she also volunteered with the Suicide Prevention Hotline, offering comfort, encouragement, and hope to countless individuals during some of their most difficult moments.
Ernestine was also known as an exceptional cook whose kitchen was filled with delicious meals, laughter, and love. Gatherings with family and friends were often centered around her table, where she nourished both body and soul with her generous spirit.
Above all else, Ernestine was a woman of unwavering faith. Deeply devoted to Jesus Christ, she lived her life as an example of Christian love, compassion, and service. Daily devotionals were an important part of her routine, and her faith guided her through every season of life. In Philadelphia, she was a member of Hickman Temple A.M.E. Church, where she served as president of the Stewardess Board and treasurer of the Birthday Club. She inspired those around her through her kindness, wisdom, and steadfast trust in God.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Jenkins; her son, Kevin Jenkins; and her sisters, Frankie Lee McCray and Amye Lee Jones. She is survived by her children, Deborah Jenkins, Wanda (Vennie) Widamen, and Warren (Tamara-Deceased) Jenkins, Jr.; her brother, Lee Ernest Williams, Jr.; her devoted granddaughter, Dr. Tasha Jenkins; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a great-niece; three great-nephews; and countless friends.
