Emery “Jim” S. Pocs, 83, of Clay Center, OH, passed away on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at Toledo Hospital, Toledo, OH. Jim was born in Clay Center, OH on December 30, 1938, to Andrew Jr. and Rose (Szabo) Pocs. Jim graduated from Genoa High School, Class of 1960. He would go on to work as a forklift driver for Guardian Industries in Millbury, OH for 15 ½ years. He then began his career at the University of Toledo, working as a custodian and retiring after 20 years of employment.
Jim was as unique and charismatic as the origin of his nickname. When he was a child, his sister Isabelle would often tease his tall and skinny frame by calling him “Slim Jim” – a name that would stick with him for the rest of his life. He was always a leader and a good example of someone to follow, as shown by his sailboat and the community that it took to build it. He had a creative mind, illustrated by his idea to mix concrete with chicken wires and pipes to create a special blend to mold his sailboat. He and his father began the project, but it soon became a neighborhood affair where everyone nearby came and offered their help. Jim, never one to forget to give his gratitude, would gift his helpers with some well-deserved beers at the end of the day. Eventually, The Eagle 3 would be born – a tough boat that survived many Port Clinton storms and was made to transverse the ocean. Jim spent many happy Sundays on his sailboat, occasionally while doing his favorite activity – fishing. When he wasn’t on The Eagle 3, he could be found hunting down some classic model trains. He built himself quite a collection, one that would make even an antique collector jealous. He loved his church, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, his community, and his family. He will be dearly missed.
Jim is survived by his siblings, Joseph F. (Gale) Pocs of Curtice, OH and Claire M. Guy of Martin, OH, and his many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Andrew J. Pocs and Rose D. Pocs; his brother, Andrew J. Pocs III; his step-sister, Isabelle A. Burko; and his brother-in-law, Steve Guy.
Visitation for Jim will be held from 10:00am – 12:00pm on Thursday, June 30, 2022, at the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home, 501 West Street, Genoa, OH. Funeral Service will be held following the visitation at 12:00pm with graveside committal services to follow at Clay Township Cemetery, Genoa, OH.
