Elva Garcia

Elva Garcia, 82, of Perrysburg, Ohio, passed away peacefully at her home on August 3, 2026.

She was born on July 15, 1944, in Harlingen, Texas, to Ignacio and Estela (Hinojosa) Garcia. Raised in a hardworking family, Elva began working at a young age as a migrant farmworker, from Michigan to Florida harvesting tomatoes, oranges, cherries, and pecans. Although her formal education concluded after the sixth grade, she remained committed to self-improvement throughout her life and later earned her GED, an accomplishment of which she was immensely proud!

For many years, Elva dedicated herself to caring for her family as a homemaker. When circumstances unexpectedly required her to become the head of her household, she approached the challenge with determination and strength. She accepted employment at an auto-parts manufacturing facility. While finding creative ways to support her family, Elva became affectionately known by many as the "Tamale Lady," spending countless weekends preparing and selling dozens of homemade tamales.

Elva was happily independent following three marriages and took great pride in the life she built for herself and her family. She will be remembered as a courageous and fearless protector of her family, a dependable supporter, a trusted confidante, and a loving presence in the lives of those who knew her. To many, she was their biggest fan, their strongest advocate, and, when necessary, their most honest critic.

A gifted cook, Elva found joy in preparing traditional Mexican meals and gathering loved ones around the table. She also had a well-known appreciation for good food. Among her favorites were watermelon, almond boneless chicken, coconut shrimp, and pot roast. She especially enjoyed visits to Dairy Queen and Schmucker's and was always happy to celebrate with a shot of 1800 tequila accompanied by tomato juice.

She enjoyed late-night coffee conversations at Denny's with her niece, Alejandra, and loved listening to and dancing to Tejano music, especially cumbias with family and friends. She spent time tending gardens and collecting jewelry. She also enjoyed trying her luck at the slot machines at Hollywood Casino in Toledo and in Detroit. Elva's adventurous spirit led her to travel throughout the country, including visits with her son in Miami, Boston, Provincetown, and Palm Springs. In her later years, she found comfort in watching her favorite Novelas, especially La Reina del Sur (Queen of the South), and cherished spending time with her beloved companion, Mamacita.

She will be deeply missed for her warm smile, infectious laugh, comforting hugs, and the words of encouragement she always seemed to know how to provide.

Elva is survived by children, Luciano (Nora) Garcia, Francisco (Kurt Glaser) Castro, Marcus (Tonya) Castro and Atanacia (Steve) Martinez, Jason (Lily Lopez) Lutts; grandchildren, Bianca (Brock Van Heck) Garcia, Lucas (Jamie) Ruiz, Erica (Alex Dehoyos) Garcia, Marcus (Brianna) Castro, Jr., Zachary (Jessica) Castro, Cassidy (Mikey Kinsey) Castro, Emily Castro, Anastasia (Tommy Delgado) Martinez, Stephen (Madison Flanigan) Martinez, Jr., and Roy Martinez; great grandchildren, Analicia (Garette Denney) Lopez, Olivia Lopez, Amiah Lopez, Melena Lopez, Terrell Klingler, Tyler Klingler, Raquel (Aiden Williams) Thomas, Baylee Ruiz, Lukie Ruiz, Catalina Ruiz, Jose Ruiz, Lila Dehoyos, Gavin Rios, Cecilia Castro, Connor Castro, Anderson Will, Sage Martinez, Lilliana Lopez, Jose Lopez, Estrella Lopez, LilyAnn Lopez; great great grandchild, Valencia Marie Williams; special niece, Alejandra Villareal; friend, Gloria Villanueva; her beloved dog, Mamacita; siblings, Diana Benavidez and Carlos Benavidez. She is preceded in death by her father, Ignacio Garcia; step-mother, Elidia Garcia; mother, Estela Benavidez; brothers, Ignacio Garcia, Jr., Ramiro Garcia, Rojelio Garcia; and former husband, Frank Castro

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 from 3:00 to 8:00 pm with a time of sharing at 7:00 pm in the Witzler-Shank-Walker Funeral Home, 222 E. S. Boundary St, Perrysburg, OH. Prayers will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, August 13, 2026 at 9:45 am with a funeral Mass to follow at 10:30 am at St. Rose Catholic Church, 215 E. Front St. Perrysburg, OH.
