Edwin L. Spackey (Ed, Eddie, Papa) passed away Tuesday, October 25th 2022, after a long illness. He was 92 years old. Ed was born December 16th, 1929, in Toledo, Ohio to Archie and Mildred Spackey (Heller). Ed was a lifelong Toledo resident. He graduated from Scott High School in 1948 and proudly served in the US Army during the Korean War, spending two years in Korea.
After returning home he attended the University of Toledo and went on to complete his master’s degree in education. Ed has held many jobs during his long career. He was a biology and chemistry teacher for Northwood, Woodmore and Genoa High Schools. He also taught college level courses at the University of Toledo and Monroe Community College, then went on to work for the City of Toledo. He spent time working with the US EPA in the Environmental Services department and ultimately retired in 2001 as Head Research Chemist for the Toledo Water Plant.
Ed married Elsie Jarrin on July 16, 1955 and they were happily married over 67 years at the time of his passing. Together they had three children, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Ed was a devoted family man, his world revolved around his family and his many varied interests and hobbies. Anything else, he couldn’t care less about. Ed was always up for an adventure even well into his old age. He loved to travel and spend time outdoors, camping and fishing. He had a passion for photography. Some of his other interests and hobbies he enjoyed were oil painting, tropical fish keeping, HAM radio, music, movies and keeping up with the latest technology – he loved his iPad! Ed loved finding a bargain, one of his most memorable quotes was “I can’t afford not to buy this!” He also loved taking an active interest into whatever his kids and grandkids were into. He loved to discover new things from them. Ed also loved to spend the winters in Ecuador where they maintained a residence for the past 25 years. He loved the climate and stretching the purchasing power of his retirement income. It was also the homeland of his wife Elsie, where they have many friends and family.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents Archie and Mildred Spackey (Heller) and his brother Arthur Spackey. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years Elsie Spackey, brother Richard Spackey (Leona), sister Bonnie Schwab, children Susan Spackey, Edwin A. Spackey (Kristy) and Jennifer Spackey-Moray (Ian), grandchildren Elizabeth Harmon (Jake), Andrew Odorzynksi (Emily), Emily Spackey and Zachary Spackey along with great-grandchildren, Everett Odorzynski, Emory Odorzynski and Lincoln Harmon.
A Memorial Mass will be held Monday, October 31, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose Catholic Church, 215 E. Front St., Perrysburg, Ohio. Burial will follow in St. Rose Cemetery. Condolences may be made to the family online at www.walkerfuneralhomes.com.
