Edward N. Nietz

Edward N. Nietz, 92, of Walbridge, passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at his home. He was born in Walbridge, Ohio to Fred and Nora (Muhl) Nietz on February 27, 1923 and raised as the son of George and Pearl Nietz, after his mother’s death. Edward was a graduate of Lake High School and Bowling Green State University and married Bernice (Gable) Nietz on October 7, 1949. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in the Pacific during World War II on the U.S.S Torrence. Ed was a farmer and was elected Wood County Treasurer where he served for 26 ½ years. He was president of Northwestern Ohio Treasurers’ Group and President of Mid State County Officials organization. He was a member of Lake-Northwood Kiwanis Club and the VFW in Walbridge, Ohio. Ed was an active churchman and served as a Sunday School Superintendent, class leader and member at Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church. Edward served as a delegate to several Ohio-Sandusky Evangelical United Brethren conferences and general conferences with the Methodist Church after Salem merged. He served as President of Evangelical United Brethren Men of Toledo Area and President for four years of Ohio Sandusky Conference. Edward chaired four annual Men’s conferences at Bowling Green State University with over 1,000 men in attendance. Ed has been a member of Mainstreet United Brethren Church in Walbridge for over 50 years. While there, he served as Class Leader, Sunday school teacher, board member, and building committee chairman among his many roles. Edward is survived by his loving wife, Bernice M. (Gable) Nietz; his children, Gary (Connie) Nietz, Denis (Ruth) Nietz, John Nietz and Gail (David) Waddell; 9 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and brother, Fred (Elinor) Nietz. He was preceded in death by his parents, nine siblings, and son, Mark Nietz. Friends will be received on Sunday, June 7, 2015 from 2-8 p.m. at the Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, 701 N. Main Street, Walbridge, Ohio (419) 666-3121. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 8, 2015 at Mainstreet Church 795 Campus in Moline located at 5465 Moline-Martin Rd. Walbridge, Ohio (419)-838-7600. Burial will follow at Lake Township Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be directed to Mainstreet Church.
