Edward J. Vander Horst, age 70, left for his final journey with his family by his side Saturday July 14th. The son of John and Alice Vander Horst, he was born June 19, 1942 in Toledo, OH. He attended St. John the Baptist Church and graduated from Macomber in 1960. He was an avid bowmen and fisherman. In his childhood he started running muskrat and turtle traps in the Ottawa River. Moving onto deer, elk and black bear. He won the Big Bear award at Mudjaw Bowman in 1984. Ed was known to have a keen sense of where to find the fish and he could reel them in. He loved hunting for mushrooms and was known to make a great omelet. He was employed for 23 years at Owens Illinois, first as a journeyman electrician and moving up to Project Management Designer. He then worked for PMCI as a Project Coordinator. Ed moved onto T.R. Worline of Swanton as a Owner Representative delegating out-of-state multi-million dollar projects. Before finally retiring he worked for E.G. & G. Inc. which took him to Pennsylvania and Tennessee to oversee large project inspection and material testing. During retirement, he worked for Gunter Wooden Toys where he played the role of elf quite well. His latest career was raising AKC Shih-Tzus. He is survived by his wife, Sandy; daughters, Jean Tom Wilcik, Janet Vander Horst, Jennifer Bob Gwin, step son Michael Gunter; 12 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren; siblings, Al Nancy, Steve, Paul Jean, Carol Steve Rutz, Dot Bill Stacy, Jim Sheila, Doug Shelia; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his step-son, Randy; father-in-law, Stanley Gunter, and step-grandson, Michael. The family would like to thank the staff of Toledo Hospital ICU and Ebied Hospice for the great care. Friends may visit the family on Wednesday from 2-8 PM and Thursday 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM at the Walker Funeral Home 5155 Sylvania Ave west of Corey Rd where services will be held at 12:00 PM on Thursday.
