On Saturday November 15, 2008, we said a final farewell to our dear Aunt Edna Lickert, age 96. Born to William and Agusta Ahrendt Base on May 9, 1912 in Trowbridge, Ohio, she was the last of her siblings. We can celebrate her life in many ways. She met her late husband, Lloyd, while attending weekend dances at the Maple Grove Dance Hall in Graytown, Ohio. They were united in marriage on November 25, 1936 in the parsonage, at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Williston, Ohio. Aunt Edna and Uncle Lloyd continued to enjoy Polka Dancing throughout their marriage, getting in their last Polka six months before Lloyds death. They had shared 62 wonderful years together. Having been raised on a farm, Edna was a true farm girl and continued to devote her life to farming after her marriage. When needed she helped in the fields, you would often see her riding her John Deer as you drove down Lickert-Harder Road, working their land along with her husband. They truly loved farming and lived on Lickert-Harder Road for their entire marriage. Although childless, Aunt Edna shared her love and countless hours giving a helping hand and opening her home for fun and summer vacations with her many nieces and nephews. In 1972 a niece of Ednas fell ill soon after giving birth to her child. Edna and Lloyd took this new child, their great niece Karen Nagy, into their home and nurtured and cared for her for many months as though she was their own. She always shared the harvest from the farm with others and made the best sticky chicken anyone could ask for. We have been blessed with many fond memories of her. After the death of her husband in 1999 and alone on the farm, she moved to Williston, Ohio to be closer to her family. She did not forget the farm. Once established in Williston, she decorated a farm room in her home displaying many items that she had brought from the farm. This made her move complete as she continued to enjoy life. Edna loved flowers and attended to her own flower garden, making sure to plant a few vegetables amongst them. Her greatest challenge and pastime was puttering with paints and stains. She loved to make old items look fresh and bright again. Given a can of paint or stain she could put it to good use, and the results were very rewarding to her. Edna is survived by nieces Phyllis Jim Haeft, and Joyce Leon Szych, great-niece, Karen Terry Steigmeier, and many other nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Lloyd, parents, brothers, Lester, Harvey, and Emery Base, and sisters Esther Base, Stella Helle, and Lillian Velliquette. The family of Edna would like to express a heartfelt thank you to her special caregivers Judee, Jennifer, Jenny, Cathie, Brenda. They would also like to thank Hospice of Northwest Ohio and all the many others that have supported her. Visitation for Edna will be on Tuesday November 18, 2008 from 2-8pm in the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home and Crematory. Funeral Services will take place on Wednesday November 19, 2008 at 1pm in St. John Lutheran Church, Rocky Ridge, Ohio.
