Edith G. Scalzo

Scalzo Edith G. Edith G. Scalzo, age 87, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 18, 2008 at her home in Toledo. Born May 27, 1921 in Chester, PA to Frederick and Daisy Guyer, Edie met her husband, Joe, at a bus stop in Philadelphia as they waited to board a bus for work at Sun Oil Company. They married in 1945 and moved to Toledo where they raised 6 children. Edie ran the household to allow Joe time to devote to his work, church, charities, politics and amateur wrestling. She worked alongside Joe to bring the World Cup Wrestling to Toledo. They attended together every Olympics from 1960 in Rome to 1988 in Seoul, Korea. Edie volunteered her time to the Toledo Opera Guild, Parkview Hospital Auxiliary, Toledo Bar Association Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, and the Ability Center. Edie was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph R. Scalzo, Sr.; daughter, Bonnie Scalzo Kaminsky; and brother, Frederick Guyer, Jr. She is survived by her children, Joseph Kathy Scalzo, Jr., JoAnn Scalzo, Sandy Mark Geudtner, Michael Melissa Scalzo, and Terry John Abel; grandchildren, Krista, Erinn Brad, Dan Elaine, Nick Katie, Jeff, Kate, Joe III, Adam, Griffin, Quinlan, Dylan, and Connor; and great-grandchildren, Keegan, Mia, and Macina. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-8:00pm at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. west of Corey Rd. with a Scripture Service at 7:00pm. Funeral services will begin on Monday with prayers at the funeral home at 12:15pm followed by 1:00pm Mass of the Resurrection at Gesu Catholic Church, 2049 Parkside Blvd. Toledo, OH. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Toledo Opera Association.
