Edgar Bryson Singleton

June 17, 1926 — December 30, 2020

Edgar B. Singleton, died on December 30, 2020 with his wife Grace at his side. He was born on June 17, 1926 in Warren, OH, and was pre-deceased by his parents Edgar W. and Ethel Singleton and sister Irene Weesner. Edgar graduated from Warren G. Harding High School before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1944. Following his WWII service, he became the first member of his family to graduate from college, receiving degrees from Ohio University and The Ohio State University before beginning a nearly 40-year career of teaching in the Department of Physics at Bowling Green State University, where his colleagues became his life-long friends. Edgar met his first wife, Marilyn Craft, when they were both members of the Broad Street Christian Church choir in Columbus, and they married in 1953. He is survived by their three children, Edgar (Lynn) of Columbus, Philip (Nancy) of Wilmington, NC, and Carrie Jane (Lodi) Siefer of Boulder, CO. He was also loved deeply and will be missed by his three grandchildren, Benjamin and Kyle Singleton and Jackson Siefer, and niece Linda Macdonald. Following Marilyn’s death and his retirement, Edgar married Grace Bell in 1996, and they made their home in Sylvania, OH. Grace’s children Mary Jen (Bret) of Pagosa Springs, CO, David of Broadview Heights, OH, and Doug (Leia) Meerdink of Los Angeles, CA welcomed Edgar into their expanded family and became an essential part of his life, eventually including beloved step-grandchildren Amanda, Lindsay, Sutter, and Arlo. Grace and Edgar traveled the world together, visiting Great Britain, Spain, Italy, Turkey, and Czechoslovakia, as well as many destinations in the US, including Alaska, Colorado, North Carolina, New York, and California. One of Edgar’s best-loved travel memories was a visit to Cremona, Italy, the home of the great violin maker, Antonio Stradivari. Edgar’s interest in woodworking, music, and the science of acoustics led him to become a prolific maker of beautiful stringed instruments in his home shop. He completed his last violin at age 93. Many of those instruments are in use today, and the music they produce will always be part of Edgar’s legacy. Edgar took a keen interest in politics and public affairs, and he was proud to cast his final vote for President Joe Biden. He maintained a deep curiosity about the world to the end, always reading, learning, and actively participating in the Science and Theology discussion group at his church home, the Sylvania United Church of Christ. The family suggests contributions be made in Edgar’s name to the church and to Habitat for Humanity. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 7, 2021 at Sylvania United Church of Christ, 7240 Erie Street, Sylvania, OH 43560. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the church or Habitat for Humanity. Condolences and fond memories are encouraged to be shared with the family on the Tribute wall of page.
