S. Dwight Stopher, age 83 of Toledo, passed away after a brave fight with cancer on Friday, January 6, 2012, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in 1928 in Centerburg, Ohio, to Harvey and Maggie Ross Stopher. He and his wife of 66 years, Freda Ernestine Styers, married when he was just 17, moving to Toledo in 1951. Dwight worked for the Davey Tree Expert Company for 47 years. He spent the latter half of his career as a supervisor and always loved the outdoors. A tree man through and through, he often preferred free climbing them well-past the advent of bucket trucks. Just last year he felled a 30 foot pine in his grandsons yard. We all have many fond memories of hearing him narrate drives in the car with the varieties of trees that past by. He attended Northpoint Church of the Nazarene. The greatest joys of his life were his family, friends, working in his garage, and his wifes good cooking. His greatest passion was fixing things, and he could be found in the driveway working underneath a truck as recently as a few weeks ago. Dwight is survived by his wife Freda Ernestine Styers Stopher; three children, Pamela Preston Cunningham, Linda Clayton, Karen Charles Baker; eight grandchildren, Christina Scott Caine, Laura Doug Cunningham-Giomi, Jennifer Scott Trost, Grant Cunningham, Scott Heather Stopher, Karla David Rison, Kimberly Baker, Clark Emily Baker; thirteen great-grandchildren, Jack and Sam Caine, Nicolas and Zachary Giomi, Andrew Davidson, Trevor and Addison Stopher, Veronica and Logan Wilson, David Charles, Faith and Hope Rison, and Chloe Baker; many well-loved nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews; church friends; neighbors and countless cherished friends from over the years who know how very dear they are. We thank you for all for your wonderful love and support through the years and particularly over the past several months. Dwight is preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Margaret, Leatha, and Neva. The family will receive friends on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Avenue west of Corey Road where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 10, 2012. Interment will be private. Memorials may be sent to Northpoint Church of the Nazarene, 5825 Suder Avenue, Toledo, Ohio 43611.
