Dr. Henry John Pfeiffer, best known as John, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, surrounded by his family. John was raised in the Williams County area and was a 1951 graduate of Bryan High School. After high school, John attended Ohio State University for Dentistry. He graduated in 1957 and went on to study post-graduate periodontics from 1963-1965. He finished schooling with earning a Master of Science in 1965, while performing his anesthesia internship in conjunction with his master’s courses. John was a member of the United States Air Force, where he practiced dentistry from 1957-1960, before his honorable discharge. Later, John partook in teaching as a professor at Ohio State, IUPU, and UTSA. He studied tribes in the Guatemala mountains and was lead doctor for the formulation of tartar control toothpaste, and Peridex mouth rinse. He was passionate about his schooling and his career throughout his life.
Henry John Pfeiffer was born in Montpelier, Ohio, on January 2, 1934, the son of John H. “Judge” and Esther (Acklin) Pfeiffer. He married Janet Louise Normandin on September 4, 1987, and she survives.
In his spare time, John enjoyed fishing, hunting, skiing, and riding his bicycle. In addition, he spent time golfing and playing tennis. He was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan and loved sports. Most recently, he was known to indulge in nightly ice cream treats, despite knowing sugar is bad for your teeth! He will be missed by his friends and family and will be remembered by the many hunting and fishing trip stories told very often.
In addition to Janet, survivors include one son, John (Beth) Pfeiffer; stepson, Phil Normandin; grandchildren, Henry Pfeiffer, and Laura (Matt) Walling; step-grandsons, AJ (Amber) Normandin, Senior Chief Petty Officer E-8, and Alec Normandin, Deputy Sheriff; great-grandchildren, Wesson and John Henry; step-great-grandchildren, Kyan, Adrian, Tywin, Vivian, and Quintyn; the mother of Henry’s sons, Kay Scherer. He is preceded by one sister, Mary Ellen Pfeiffer and one son, Jeff Pfeiffer.
Visitation will be held at Walker Funeral Home, Sylvania Avenue, on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, from 4-7pm. Burial will take place at Clear Lake Lutheran Church Cemetery, 270 Outer Drive, Fremont, IN, on Thursday, September 15, 2022, at 1:00pm.
