It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Dr. Donald J. Stierman, a distinguished geophysicist and beloved Professor Emeritus at the University of Toledo. Dr. Stierman, born October 27, 1947, dedicated his life to his family, the pursuit of knowledge, and the betterment of others.
Never one to shy away from a challenge, he and the love of his life, Linda, took a huge leap of faith and volunteered their young lives to the Peace Corps in Honduras. While abroad, they married and welcomed their first child, Peggy, into the world. Donald received a Fullbright Scholarship to teach and continue to do research in Honduras and returned many other times to help rebuild after hurricanes.
After his service to the Peace Corps was completed, Donald earned his Ph.D. in Geophysics from Stanford University, showcasing his unwavering commitment to academic excellence. He began his teaching career at The University of California Riverside, where he also became an ardent gardener.
Throughout his career, Dr. Stierman inspired countless students with his love of science, guiding the next generation to understand the world underneath us. His passion for environmental science was unmatched, and his wisdom and mentorship will be profoundly missed by colleagues, students, and the academic community he touched.
He was a staunch supporter of The University of Toledo Athletics and was an indomitable fan of Rockets Football and Lady Rockets Basketball (both of which he saw win their respective games the night before his passing!).
In addition to his professional achievements, Donald was a loving husband, coach, father, brother, cherished friend, and an inspiration to all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and intellectual curiosity that will continue for generations.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 53 years, Linda; his children, Peggy, Daniel (Amanda), Robert (Amanda), Michael (Sarah); and his siblings, Tom (Sue), Jeanette, Roger (Lori), Lois (Lee), John (Cathy), Charles (Pam), and Steve (Sandra). He is preceded in death by his parents, Laverne and Esther Stierman. He was also blessed with ten grandchildren and one great-grandson with whom he shared his love of playing music and hunting for rocks.
Visitation will be September 1st, 2024, at 12 noon. 1:30 pm Service with Deacon John Stierman, Officiating at Witzler-Shank-Walker Funeral Home, 222 East South Boundary Street, Perrysburg, Ohio 43551.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Doctors Without Borders in Donald's memory. Your love and support bolsters us during this difficult time.
