Douglas Charles Spencer

Jul 17, 1943 — Oct 7, 2026

Douglas Charles Spencer passed away peacefully at his Sylvania home on October 7, 2026, surrounded by the family he loved so dearly. After an extended and courageous journey with pulmonary fibrosis and years of physical decline, Doug remained hopeful, realistic, and positive, never complaining. His strength and grace inspired everyone around him. A kind, humble, and generous man who always put others before himself, Doug was truly one of life's most genuine souls.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, to George and Thelma Spencer on July 17, 1943, Doug was an active youngster who excelled in many sports. He graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School in 1961 and later attended the University of Toledo, where he played on the Rockets varsity golf team and was a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity. Although he loved competition, he treasured even more the people, camaraderie, and stories that came with it. A tremendous storyteller, Doug, filled his tales with laughter and joy. His kindness, humility, gentle smile, and warm nature earned him lifelong friends throughout the community and beyond.

Doug was a devoted husband, a wonderful father, and a generous grandfather. Despite his many accomplishments, his family was his greatest joy. He showed his love not only in words but also through the time he gave them and the way he always showed up. Weekends often found him on the sidelines, cheering on his children and grandchildren at hockey rinks, basketball courts, and soccer and lacrosse fields. When he was in town, he rarely missed a game or event and was always their biggest fan. He also loved Notre Dame football. Go Irish!

Doug's business career in the Toledo area spanned more than fifty years. He began at his family's trucking business, Dean Delivery, then became a leading sales executive at Rad-Mar Press before concluding his career as general manager of Millcraft Paper. Throughout those years, clients valued his attention to detail, his honest and trustworthy advice, and his genuine commitment to making their jobs easier. The lasting relationships he built were at the heart of his success.

Although Doug was a gifted athlete in many sports, golf became his lifelong passion. After playing on the University of Toledo golf team, he won the Highland Meadows Club Championship three times, the Toledo District Best Ball Championship six times, and the Ohio Best Ball Championship in 1976. In his late 70s, he became the first club champion at his beloved Heritage Landing Country Club in Punta Gorda, Florida. He also remains co-holder of the Highland Meadows men's course record of 63.

Doug served the game of golf as generously as he played it. A longtime member of the Inverness Club, he served as grounds chairman and planned and oversaw a major course renovation. At Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania, he served two terms as club president. For nearly forty years, he proudly supported and worked closely with Judd Silverman on the annual LPGA event originally known as the Jamie Farr Classic. He also co-founded the Toledo Amateur Golf Association Championship and the Toledo Junior Golf Association, an organization especially close to his heart that has since become a model for junior golf programs across the United States. He was a past recipient of the Burt Silverman Award and PGA of America President's Award.

Reflecting on Doug's life, his brother Denny said, "Doug was the greatest natural athlete I ever knew and by far the best brother any man could hope for. I was blessed to be his brother and best friend my entire life, and I admired and marveled at his complete humility in the face of so much talent. I'm going to miss him for the rest of my days."

When he wasn't golfing, Doug enjoyed pheasant and duck hunting trips with friends, including trips to Winner, South Dakota, Walpole Island, and the Toussaint River. These outings gave him another opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, share stories, and spend time with the many friends who meant so much to him. He also loved water sports, boating, and his brittany spaniels!

Doug had a remarkable gift for friendship. He maintained relationships throughout his life, kept in touch with people from every chapter of it, and made everyone he encountered feel that he had time for them. Whether he had known someone for decades or had just met them, he made people feel welcome, valued, and important. His kindness, genuine interest in others, and easygoing nature created friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Left to cherish Doug's memory are Bonnie, his wife of 61 years; his sons, Mark (Mardell), Michael (Robyn), and Jamie (Olivia); his seven grandchildren, Blake, Julia, Collin, Rachel, Thomas, Maya, and Bella; and the many friends whose lives he touched in such positive ways.

Doug Spencer leaves a lasting void in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. His kindness, humility, generosity, and unwavering love for others will live on in the countless lives he touched. He will be remembered not only for all he accomplished, but for the person he was and the love he gave so freely.
