Douglas R. Perry, age 57, passed away peacefully at the Hospice of Northwest Ohio on February 2, 2016. He was born in Toledo, Ohio to Robert and Doretta Perry. Early in life, Douglas was very active in baseball and was an outstanding pitcher. On February 19, 1974, at the age of fifteen, Douglas was severely injured in a gymnastics accident at Whitmer High School, which left him as a partial quadriplegic. Despite this obstacle, Douglas chose to persevere and enjoy life, graduating from Whitmer High School and attending the University of Toledos Community Technical School. In 1982 he received his Associates Degree and later received a Certificate in Computer Programming from Kent State University. From 1986 to 1992, Douglas worked at Lutheran Social Services as a computer programmer. Douglas enjoyed Nascar and other races; watching football (both college and professional), his favorite team being Ohio State; and had an extensive DVD collection in addition to his love for listening to music. He also enjoyed his time with his family, experimenting in the kitchen with recipes he learned from watching the Food Network. He is survived by his parents; sisters, Cynthia (Roger) Coe, Tracy (David) Screptock, and Andrea (Scott) DeCavitch; four nephews, two nieces, one great nephew, and two great nieces. A special thank you Antwan, Chereese, Duane, Bill , the staff of Hospice of Northwest of Ohio, St. Lukes Hospital and Wound Care Center, Promedica Hospitals and Wound Care, Advanced Specialty Hospital, and Heartland of Perrysburg for their loving care given to Douglas. Family and friends may visit the Walker Funeral home on Thursday, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.) on February 4, 2016 from 3 - 8 PM. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, February 5 at 11 AM with interment to follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Douglas R. Perry Charitable Fund at any Fifth Third Bank, through the Memorial Benefit Account (Reference #8692).
