Douglas A. Merritt

Doug Merritt, 67, of Oregon, Ohio, passed away peacefully in his family home on Thursday, August 29, 2024, alongside his beloved wife, Shelly, and their three dogs Shiloh, Mia, and Lita.

Born on September 18, 1956, in Toledo, Ohio, Doug was the son of Franklin and Irene (Nimigean) Merritt. He was a selfless husband, brother, uncle, and friend, who always put everyone else before himself. In 1992 he married the love of his life, Shelly Newell, in Las Vegas. Together they shared a love for dogs and adopted several over the years.

After retiring from Jeep, Doug kept busy by working on countless projects and lending a helping hand to those around him. He cherished his time with family and friends and embraced his love for adventure by taking his motorcycle on cross-country trips and weekend rides with friends.

Doug is preceded in death by his parents and brother Bob. He is survived by his wife Shelly, sister-in-law Deb, niece Kimberly (Joe), nephew Matthew, great-niece Zoey, as well as his in-laws David and Beverly Newell, Kelly and Steve Robon, Bob Newell (Sheryl), and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Doug‘s family would like to thank his entire medical team and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their care. Friends are welcome to pay their respects at the Oregon Walker Funeral Home, 3500 Navarre Ave, Oregon, Ohio on Thursday, September 5, 2024, from 4-7 p.m. with a memorial service beginning at 7:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Doug’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Toledo Area Humane Society.
