Douglas Gardner Haag passed away at home on May 9, 2026, at the age of 83.
Doug was born in Detroit, Michigan, on October 19, 1942, the son of Leonard and Jeanette (Gardner) Haag.
He was raised in the Presbyterian Church and was Protestant by faith.
Doug grew up in Loudonville, Ohio, and was a 1960 graduate of Loudonville High School.
He graduated from Miami of Ohio University in 1964 with a bachelor's degree in finance and accounting. While at Miami, he was a member of the swimming team, competing in distance freestyle events. Doug was also a member and an officer of the Delta Chi Fraternity, where he made many lifelong friends.
He attended graduate school at the University of Michigan, where he earned an MBA in 1965.
It was in Ann Arbor where he met his wife of more than 57 years, Brenda. They married in January of 1969.
Doug and Brenda resided in Ottawa Hills, where they raised their two sons, Scott and Brian.
Doug was employed by Owens-Illinois, first in the Forest Products Division, then later on the corporate staff, where he was promoted to Director of Finance and Assistant Treasurer.
After accepting an early retirement offer in 1991, Doug spent the remainder of his professional career with HCR Manor Care as Vice President and Treasurer, retiring in 2004.
He served in the Air National Guard for 6 years during the Vietnam War.
In his mid-30s, Doug was introduced to sailing, and it became a primary passion for the remainder of his life.
He and Brenda were members of the North Cape Yacht Club for over 40 years, during which Doug had the honor of serving as the club's 2003 Commodore. He was also the current Treasurer of the North Cape Sailing School.
Doug was also an accomplished amateur photographer. For more than a decade, he was the official photographer for the annual Mills Trophy Race, sponsored by the Toledo Yacht Club. He was particularly proud that many of his photographs are framed and displayed in the homes of friends, as well as in many local yacht clubs.
He was preceded in passing by his parents, Leonard and Jeanette Haag; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Arthur and Bette Rees; and an infant son.
Doug is survived by his wife, Brenda; son Scott Douglas Haag and Scott's partner, Sherry Radke, of Columbus, Ohio; son Brian Rees Haag, M.D., and daughter-in-law, BeLinda Mathie, of Chicago, Illinois; sister Kathleen Haag of Big Rapids, Michigan; brother-in-law Jack Rees of New Castle, Pennsylvania; and two nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the North Cape Sailing School, c/o North Cape Yacht Club, 11850 Toledo Beach Rd., LaSalle, MI 48145; American Heart Association, 4841 Monroe St., Toledo, OH 43623; or to the charity of the donor's choice.
Doug will be cremated. His family will scatter his remains privately.
A visitation will take place at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave., Toledo, OH 43623, on Thursday, May 21, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. A memorial service will begin at the funeral home at 11 a.m., immediately following the visitation.
