Douglas S. Groch, 59, of Rossford, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio after a courageous battle with cancer.
Doug was born on May 26, 1966, in Toledo, Ohio, and lived most of his life in Rossford. He was a steady and loving presence in the lives of those who knew him. A private man by nature, Doug didn’t seek the spotlight — but he had many people who loved him deeply. Above all, he was a devoted father — his daughter, Chloe Groch, was the center of his world and his greatest pride.
He is survived by his daughter Chloe; his parents, David and Donna Groch; his sister, Debi (Don) Anson; niece Samantha Kruse; nephew David Kruse; his lifelong friend William “Dudley” Dowell; special friend Keefe Snyder; and many other family and friends throughout his life. Each of them held a special place in his heart. His two aunts, Sue Culp and Lynette Hearst also played an important role in helping with his care, during his illness. A special thank you to Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their care.
Doug spent 40 years working at General Motors, known for his reliability, hard work, and sense of humor. Outside of work, he had a deep passion for the outdoors, particularly hunting and collecting memorabilia. He spent countless weekends visiting flea markets and shows, building a one-of-a-kind collection. Doug was known as one of the most knowledgeable people in the country about Fred Bear — the legendary outdoorsman — and took great pride in studying and preserving Bear’s legacy.
Doug lived by one of Fred Bear’s quotes: “A rainstorm isn’t a reason to quit the hunt, it’s a reason to stay.” That was Doug through and through — someone who didn’t walk away when life got hard, who stayed loyal, and who showed up with quiet strength.
A celebration of Doug’s life will be held on Sunday, July 20th, 2025, from 12pm-3pm at Schaller Memorial Building, 130 W. Indiana Avenue, Perrysburg, Ohio 43551. Doug’s family invites you to share memories, photos, or messages of condolence below.
In honoring Doug’s life, remember the simple values he lived by: stay steady, stay loyal, and never quit the hunt. Memorial donations may be given in care of Sujkowski-Walker Funeral Home, 830 Lime City Road, Rossford, Ohio 43460, to support Doug’s 24-year-old daughter, Chloe, during this difficult time.
