March 13, 1933 — November 29, 2025

Perrysburg

Douglas “Doug” J. Pratt, 92, of Perrysburg Township, Ohio, passed away peacefully at his home on November 29, 2025.

Doug was born at his family home on Hull Prairie Road on March 13, 1933, to Fred and Mabel Pratt. His life was deeply rooted in the land that shaped him—the extraordinary Pratt Family Farm, more than 200 years old and one of the oldest continually operated farmsteads in Ohio. Doug grew up surrounded by this heritage learning hard work, humility, and careful guardianship from an early age. Though he never sought recognition, his dedication to his land, his work, and his community leaves a legacy of integrity and service that will endure for generations.

A lifelong farmer, Doug dedicated himself to caring for the family’s 160-acre farm, tending soybeans, corn, and wheat with steady pride. The Pratt homestead traces back to Doug’s great-great-grandfather, William Pratt, an early settler, and War of 1812 veteran who fought at Fort Meigs. Doug treasured this deep historical connection and participated in local heritage events honoring the community’s early families.

Doug served his country as a veteran of the U.S. Army (Korea) and later served his hometown with distinction. For more than 50 years, he worked for Perrysburg Schools as a bus driver and district mechanic, becoming known across generations as “Mr. Reliable.” Over his lengthy career, he worked under nine superintendents and was trusted by countless families due to his calm nature, dependability, and kindness. Doug was also a 32-year volunteer firefighter with the City of Perrysburg Fire Department, a Special Sheriff Deputy with the Wood County Sheriff’s Office and an amateur pilot who enjoyed flying over the farmland he loved.

On March 29, 1958, Doug married Mary Ellen (Kramer). Together they shared 65 years of partnership built on faith, hard work, and deep mutual support. They loved travelling, especially their fishing trips to Alaska, where they found peace and joy in the wilderness together.

Doug and Mary Ellen have left an everlasting impact by their remarkable generosity. In 2008, with support of the American Legion Post 28, they helped fund the Perrysburg Veterans Memorial in Hood Park. Doug and Mary Ellen were also instrumental donors to the Wood County Fairgrounds pavilion project, which was named the Fred H. Pratt Livestock Pavilion in honor of Doug’s father.

To protect the Pratt Family Farm for enjoyment by future generations, Doug and Mary Ellen donated their entire 160-acre homestead to the Wood County Park District. Doug requested that the land be responsibly stewarded, ensuring that the historic property, dating back to 1825, will become a public park. The Pratts’ gift remains one of the most meaningful land donations in county history.

Known for his modesty, gentle wit, and steady demeanor, Doug found joy in the simple rhythms of life: sunrise over the fields, the turning of the seasons, a cat on his lap and conversations with friends and family. We will all miss being able to stop by the barn for a chat with Doug.

Doug is survived by his brother, George (Jill) Pratt; nephews, Bruce III, David, and Jim; and nieces Margaret and Susan. Doug was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen; parents, Fred and Mabel (Redman); his brother, J. Fred Pratt; sister, Carol Pratt; and nephews John, Phillip and Tom.

Friends and family will be received on Saturday, December 13th, 2025, from 1–4 p.m. at Witzler-Shank-Walker Funeral Home, 222 E. South Boundary Street, Perrysburg, where a celebration of Doug’s life will be held at 4 p.m. Burial will be private. Doug’s wishes were that no flowers were to be sent. Memorial contributions may be made to the Flag City Honor Flight, Hospice of Northwest Ohio or The Wood County Humane Society. Condolences may be shared online at www.walkerfuneralhomes.com.
