Douglas E. Bahnsen

September 18, 1945 — July 16, 2025

Douglas E. Bahnsen, 79, of Perrysburg, Ohio, passed away on July 16, 2025. Doug was born in Toledo, Ohio, on September 18, 1945, the son of Robert and Pearl (Taylor) Bahnsen. Doug was a lifelong Ohioan whose deep love for nature, music, and local history left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.

Doug married the love of his life, Mary (Snyder) Bahnsen, on December 14, 1974, in Perrysburg, and together they shared a beautiful life rooted in community, creativity, and love for others.

A passionate historian and educator at heart, Doug dedicated much of his life to teaching others about the rich history of Northwest Ohio. He was well known throughout the region for his vivid historical reenactments, most famously portraying Johnny Appleseed for schoolchildren, at the Apple Butter Festival, in Grand Rapids, Ohio, and in local parades like Harrison Rally Days. He also brought history to life at the Grand Rapids canal, where he reenacted life on the canal boats with enthusiasm and authenticity.

Doug had a wide range of interests that reflected his deep curiosity and joy for life. He had a special love for classic cars, especially his 1929 Ford Model A and his beloved mid-1960s GTO. He also found great peace and purpose in gardening and caring for the earth. A committed environmentalist, Doug was passionate about recycling and conservation, always striving to protect and preserve the natural world he cherished.

Doug's warmth, energy, and creativity extended beyond history. A gifted musician, he played the banjo and guitar, often writing his own music and sharing it with friends and family. During the winter months, Doug donned the red suit and delighted countless families as Santa Claus, continuing his tradition of bringing joy to others in every season.

Doug had many, many friends and was known and loved throughout the area for his kind heart, generous spirit, and tireless devotion to his community. His storytelling, songs, and talent will be deeply missed.

Left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Mary Bahnsen; children, Scott (Angie) Bahnsen, and Christopher Bahnsen; granddaughter, Emma Bahnsen; sister, Debbie (Peter) MacDonald; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Pearl Bahnsen.

No services will be held at this time. Witzler-Shank-Walker Funeral Homes have been entrusted will all arrangements.
