Dorothy Edith Shugarts

Dorothy E. Shugarts age 85 of Maumee, passed away on Wednesday morning August 17, 2011 at The University of Toledo Medical Center. She was born in Dubois, PA on April 7, 1926 to John H. and Clara E. Williams Harris. In her youth, Dorothy enjoyed playing basketball and was Head Majorette at DuBois Area High School. After graduating, Dorothy was chosen to pursue a career in Washington, D.C. with the FBI was as a finger printist. However, she was forced to return home to DuBois due to a serious illness. On April 12, 1947, Dorothy was married to Thomas R. Shugarts. They were blessed with one daughter, Linda in 1953. Tom and Dorothy moved to Margate, Florida in 1955, where Tom was vital in building the city of Margate. Tom, Dorothy and Linda always remembered their time in Florida as one of the happiest and most enjoyable parts of their lives together as a family. In 1962, the family moved to Maumee, Ohio, where Dorothy worked in Accounts Payable at Seaway Foodtown. She remained with Foodtown for 24 years, before retiring in 1986. Dorothy loved to travel, and the family took a two week vacation each year, often stopping to visit friends along the way. She and Tom had visited 48 states, taken a cruise to the Bahamas and a train tour of the northwest during their 61 year marriage. Dorothy was a wonderful mother to her only child, Linda. She and Tom were blessed to be able to send their daughter to college, and proud that she was the first to graduate college in their families. When granddaughter, Brittany was born, Dorothy became a devoted grandmother and cared for her in her home when Linda worked. As a child of Christ, Dorothy gave tirelessly of herself, expecting nothing in return. Her calm spirit kept her happy and loving during her final years, spent at Ridgewood Manor Nursing Home. She will be greatly missed and forever loved by her family and friends. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Linda Richard Lark and granddaughter, Brittany Lark. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas R. Shugarts; brothers, John M. Harris and Raymond W. Harris. Friends and family may visit at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home 501 Conant St. Maumee on Friday August 19, 2011 from 4-8 pm where funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Maumee. Memorial contributions may be made to Maumee United Methodist Church or The Cherry Street Mission.
