Dorothy Elsie Schafer

November 3, 1922 — July 6, 2015

Dorothy Elsie (Arbaugh) Schafer, age 92, died at Hospice of Northwest Ohio on Monday, July 6,2015 surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Toledo on November 3, 1922 to Harry  Eugene and Mae (Almroth) Arbaugh. She graduated from Devilbiss High School and attended Toledo University. During World War II, Dottie worked in the payroll department at Pure Oil Company. She and the love of her life, Don Schafer, married in Florida before he shipped overseas in 1943. They walked side by side for 70 years in life and in business, owning and operating Dersher Roofing and Sheet Metal Company. They moved the business to Monroe, MI in 1960, where they were also involved in various commercial real estate projects. Dorothy was a gentle and caring woman who loved to laugh. She enjoyed knitting, reading, and traveling with Don. She was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church. Some of her volunteer activities in Toledo and Monroe were with the Flower Hospital Frog Ladies, Altrusa International, and the Thrift Shop Association. She is survived by her loving daughter Debra (Dan) Johnson, sisters-in-law Marilyn Arbaugh  and Betty Paxton, niece Jennifer Arbaugh, nephew Brian (Jennifer) Arbaugh and their daughters  Hailey, MacKenzie, Drew, and Quinn. Other nieces and nephews are Clyde Steel, Cheryl Schafer, Tom Schafer, Karen (Oestreich) Murray, Kathy (Paxton) Ashcraft, Kevin Paxton, Steve Miller, and Mike Miller. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Jeff, her brother Jim Arbaugh, and her beloved husband Don. Dorothy lived her last years with respect and dignity provided by ‘the family of angels’ at Swan Creek Memory Enhancement Unit. Her family and friends are also grateful for the compassionate care provided at Hospice of NW Ohio. Visitation will be on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey).  A funeral service will immediately follow at 4:00 conducted by the Rev. Cheryl Nutting. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of NW Ohio 30000 River Rd.
