Dorothy Mary Saloff

June 16, 1929 — August 7, 2016

On Sunday, June 16, 1929 Anna Dudash Saloff gave her husband, George Kuzo Saloff a remarkable Father’s Day gift – a beautiful baby girl that they named Dorothy Mary. Mother thought Dorothy was such a beautiful baby that they frequently came in the room and took her to show everyone in the hospital. The nuns told Mother that they took Dorothy in to the chapel and prayed that she would have a long, healthy, and prosperous life. Dorothy attended Birmingham Elementary School and later graduated first in her class from Waite High School class of 1947. She received a scholarship from the University of Toledo and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Education Degree in 1951. While attending the University of Toledo she was Vice-President of Kappa Delta Pi Educational Honorary and Phi Alpha Theta History Honorary and elected to the University of Toledo Honor Society in 1951. She was also an alumni member of Phi Kappa Phi and a charter member and past Vice-President of Kappa Delta Pi Alumni. She was chosen as a participant in the 1968 Summer NDEA Institute for Advanced Reading at U.T. She received her Master in Education in 1971. Dorothy taught in grades 2, 3, and 4 at Raymer Elementary School for 43 years and served on various committees with the Toledo Public Schools. A Certificate of Appreciation was presented in 1964 for her valuable contribution as a school Discussion Leader for the Mathematics program and a Certificate of Recognition for her distinguished service as a member of the Council of Instruction. She contributed to a Godd Apple Publication, Touching and Teaching Metrics and a Toledo Public School booklet “Getting To Know You”. She became a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar in 1973. She retired in 1994 and is a member of Phi Delta Kappa, education honorary, past Secretary of Delta Kappa Gamma, a life member of U.T. Alumni Association and a donor to the U.T. Foundation, Toledo Lucas County Library legacy Foundation, American Association of University Women and the Toledo Museum of Art Centennial Society. She was known to be studiously practical and impeccably polite. Dorothy and her sister, Georgianna have a combined 83 years in education. In 1995 Dorothy established the Dorothy M. Saloff Scholarship of $1,000 that is given yearly to a local student with the possibility of renewal if the student maintains a 2.5 GPA. The student must also demonstrate a good quality of leadership, financial need, and excellent community and citizenship skills. Dorothy established this scholarship in the hopes that it could change someone’s life the way the University of Toledo changed hers with a scholarship in 1947. The George and Anna Saloff Memorial Scholarship was established on August 30, 2005 to assist full time students that are working toward a degree in early childhood development. Dorothy and her sister, Georgianna also contributed to the expansion and renovation of the Birmingham Branch Library and the new children’s area complete with a tree house and reading nooks, just for kids, and named “The Saloff Children’s Room” in their honor. The Saloff Sisters graciously helped sponsor similar accomodations at the Locke Branch Library. Dorothy was also recognized by the Renaissance Gala Committee of the East Toledo Family Center for being a key source of inspiration to students. In 2004 she received the Distinguished Service Award from the University of Toledo College of Education Alumni Affiliate and was given a resolution from Toledo City Council recognizing her and her sister as Outstanding Citizens of Toledo. The Saloff Sisters also dedicated a pillar to their parents at the Alumni Pavillion at the University of Toledo. Dorothy leaves behind a legacy of giving to those in need and will long be remembered for her commitment to education. Left to cherish her memory is her sister, Georgianna who fondly remembers their travels through Europe; Godchild, Tammy Farrell; cousins, Barbara Schlievert, Jerry Jacobs, Joe Opre, James Opre, and many other relatives and friends. Visitation will take place at Hoeflinger-Bolander Funeral Home, 3500 Navarre Ave., Oregon, OH on Friday, August 12, 2016 from 2-8 P.M. Funeral services will be conducted at St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church, 4001 Navarre Ave., Oregon, OH at 1 PM on Saturday, August 13, 2016. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church where Dorothy was a devoted lifelong member. “I feel that the prayers of the nuns at St. Vincent Hospital were answered because Dorothy was a three time survivor of cancer. She was very ill five years ago and weighed only 60 pounds but we brought her home and were able to regain her health and raise her weight to 100 pounds. This past year Dorothy was telling me she went to the Garden Gate but no one would let her in. We told her it was not time for her to go yet. As she was dying of heart failure I whispered in her ear that Ma and Dad are waiting for her with open arms and will take good care of her. Love You Always” I would like to thank all of the caregivers who took care of Dorothy through the last several years. A special thank you to cousin Jerry Jacobs who was just a phone call away 24 hours a day.
