Doris Ann Jones

August 9, 1941 — October 18, 2022

Dr. Doris Ann Jones passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, following a brief illness and

failing health in recent years. She was 81.

Doris was a pioneer in her profession as a female dentist. She built a 48-year dental practice in Toledo beginning with an office on Lagrange Street, later moving to Sylvania Avenue, and finally working from an office on Sunforest Court. She truly loved being a family dentist. Her patients benefitted from her skill, knowledge, and care. She put patient needs first despite their inability to compensate her for services. She also donated time to the Mildred Bayer Clinic for the Homeless. With a passion for her profession and for patients, Doris reluctantly retired in 2012.

Always scientifically oriented, Doris was especially proud that she was the first female dental student to earn a Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry in 1966. She referred to fellow classmates as “her boys” and kept in touch with them over the years.

She was a retired life member of the American Dental Association, Ohio Dental Association, and the Greater Toledo Dental Society.

A native of Seymour, Indiana, Doris was born on August 9, 1941. She was blessed to be a part of a hardworking, close-knit family. She often fondly recounted tales of growing up in Seymour. She graduated from Shields High School in 1959. She earned her undergraduate degree from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, in 1962.

In her free time, Doris enjoyed golf and was in several women’s leagues. She was also an avid bridge player. She enjoyed traveling with trips that included England, Turkey, Greece, and Africa. Her trip to Africa was for a medical mission.

Doris was a longtime member of Hampton Park Christian Church where she served as an elder and a deacon. Her faith journey included participating in Northwest Ohio Emmaus (1991), a program strengthening Christian disciples and leaders. Doris was a member of PEO AQ Chapter in Toledo, a faith-based organization that empowers women through faith, service, and education.

Doris was preceded in death by her grandmother, Josephine Haden; parents, Arthur Ray Jones and Mary Catherine (Haden) Jones; her sisters, Betty Jones Kiel, and Carol Jones; and niece, Joann Kiel.

In Indiana, she is survived by her nephew, Scott (Beth) Kiel; great nephew, Tyler (Katie) Kiel; and great niece, Sarah Kiel. In Toledo, “Momma Doris” was especially close to her niece, Ashley Jones (Ben Pierce) and their children, Zoe and Zachary Pierce. She especially delighted in watching Zoe and Zach grow and being included in family trips to Disneyworld.

Doris will be remembered for her keen intellect, professional expertise, and outstanding patient care; and for her generous heart, fun-loving spirit, and deep faith in the Lord.

Visitation will be at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.) on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 from 12:00 pm until the time of service at 3:00 pm.
