Doran James Snyder, 83, of Walbridge, OH was called Home by his Lord and Savior at 4:15 AM on Wednesday, November 4, 2015, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg. Doran was born in his grandparents’ farmhouse in Wauseon, OH on May 22, 1932, to Clyde and Myrtle Snyder. He married his high school sweetheart, Donna Rose Fortney, on December 15, 1951. Besides his wife Donna, to whom he was married for nearly 64 years, he is survived by his two sons, Michael (Mimi) Snyder of Fontana, CA, and Craig (Vicki) Snyder of Walbridge, as well as five grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Robert (Virginia) Snyder of Findlay, OH, and two sisters, Marilyn (Robert) Geiger and Peg Walters, both of Florida. Doran was a 1950 graduate of Delta High School, where he excelled in the classroom and on the athletic field in football, basketball and track. He continued his pursuit of academic and athletic excellence at Findlay College from 1950-1954, earning a B.S. Degree in Education. He taught Biology, Physical Education and Drivers’ Education at Pandora-Gliboa High School from 1954-1957, while also serving as the Rocket’s Head Football Coach, Junior Varsity Basketball Coach and Head Track Coach. In 1957 he was named Head Track Coach and Offensive Coordinator for the football program at Toledo Waite High School. While teaching Biology at Waite he was named the Ohio Science Teacher of the Year in 1961. He left the classroom in 1967 to become Waite’s Athletic Director and held that position until 1977. Doran held a number of administrative positions in Toledo Public Schools until his retirement in 1984. A day after his retirement he began an 11-year career with Toledo Christian Schools. He served the school as principal, athletic director and coach, helping TCS move from a K-8 system into its current K-12 format. He is a member of the University of Findlay Athletic Hall of Fame and the Hancock County Hall of Fame, as well as the Toledo Area Athletic Conference and Toledo Christian Schools Halls of Fame. Doran actively served his Lord for many years as a member of Perrysburg Alliance Church, where he served as an elder, deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He was also active in Gideons International (Wood County Camp), serving at one time as its president. He enjoyed speaking at many pastors’ banquets, always ready to encourage with the Word of God. He also served on the Toledo area’s Youth for Christ Board. The family would like to thank Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg for their fine care, as well as the many loving people from Visiting Angels who helped him in his final months. Friends will be received on Sunday, November 8, 2015 from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, 701 N. Main Street, Walbridge (419-666-3121). A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, November 9, 2015 at 10:00 AM at Perrysburg Alliance Church, 10401 Avenue Rd Perrysburg, OH 43551. Burial will follow in Lake Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Doran’s name may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Gideons International, Toledo Christian Schools, Visiting Angels, or the Perrysburg Alliance Church.
