Dora H. Ewert

August 9, 1933 — March 9, 2020

Dora H. Ewert, 86, of Williston, Ohio, died Monday, March 9, 2020 at the Luther Home of Mercy, where she had resided since 1956.  Dora was born in East Prussia, Germany on August 9, 1933 the daughter of Otto and Elisa Ewert. Dora’s early life was very difficult.  In 1944, during WWII, Dora’s father was captured by the Russians and set to Siberia.  Dora, her mother, sister, brother, & grandmother, who were living in East Prussia, left in 1945 to escape the war, and took passage on a fishing boat to Denmark.  They lived there until the defeat of Hitler.  After the war they lived in a concentration camp in Denmark until they traveled back to Germany.  Once there they were confined to a Russian concentration camp where they escaped and were recaptured several times.  Eventually Dora and her family were reunited with their father.  Dora had a dream of coming to America and in 1955 she realized that dream. Dora was sponsored by a family from Michigan who wanted her to look after the wife’s mother but on the trip to American Dora became very sick and was taken in by some friends from Germany.  Dora’s health declined over the next four weeks and on the fifth week she was taken to a hospital.  She slipped into a coma for the next four weeks.  Her doctor knew that she would require specialized care and he was a friend of Reverend Max and Lillian Schleicher who had a facility who could give Dora the care she needed; the Luther Home of Mercy.  Dora was transferred to Luther Home on March 1, 1956 and has lived there ever since.  She first lived in cottage 5, later moving to cottage 7 and finally her current residence in cottage 11.  Dora was blessed on June 7, 1970 when she became a citizen of the United States! Dora liked to spend time outdoors enjoying nature and sitting by the pond, visiting friends and working on her computer writing about her life and keeping in contact with her family.  Her room was decorated with a collection of figurines, angels and knick-knacks reflective of her life along with many beautiful wall hangings. Dora is survived by her sister, Irmgard Schubring, who lives in Massachusetts and brother Erich Ewert who resides in Germany along with the many friends she has  at Luther Home.   She was preceded in death by her parents. A memorial service for Dora will be held at a later date.  It is suggested that memorial contribution be directed to the Luther Home of Mercy.  The Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 501 West St., Genoa, Ohio is assisting with arrangements.  Online condolences may be made at www.walkerfuneralhomes.com.
