Nutter Donald Don Donald D. Don Nutter passed away in his home on August 16, 2008. He was born on November 23, 1924 at Cabin Run, Doddridge County, West Virginia to the late Bruce O. and Clara Nutter. On November 20, 1943, he married Ruth Ellen Smith of Arnolds Creek, West Union, West Virginia. They were married 63 cherished years residing in Toledo, Ohio where Don was employed by the Standard Oil Refinery. He retired in 1985 after 42 years of service. Don grew up helping his parents in West Virginia operate a 266 acre subsistence farm raising crops and livestock. He worked with his father using wagons and draft horses contracting for the local mining, natural gas, and oil drilling industries and for the electrification of the area by the W.P.A. At age sixteen he worked as an oil well drilling rig worker. This experience served him well as the management at the Standard Oil Refinery were impressed with his knowledge of oil well drilling technology, his capacity for hard work, and his company loyalty. He enjoyed gardening, sharing his produce with family and friends and winning much praise for the quality of his produce, especially his potatoes and tomatoes. He and his wife Ruth Ellen loved West Virginia and its people and frequently returned home to visit and work on the Smith family farm with brother-in-law Burl Travis and sisters-in-law Edwina Travis and Mary Jett. He was generous with his talents, time and resources. He loved power tools and machinery having grown up in a time where everything was done by hand. He bought loads of rough cut lumber from West Virginia saw mills and worked them up to create furniture and other projects he shared with family and friends. Don was reunited with his wife Ruth, his parents, and brothers and sisters. He is survived by his children: Karlen Sue Vernon Browning, Sharon William Bailiff, and Bette Ken Nutter ;grandchildren: Holly JohnGraff, David Jill Browning, Gretchen Chad Van Sickle, Ryan Nutter, David Bailiff, Alison Todd Kippel, Andrea Bailiff and Elizabeth Jason Richards, great-grandchildren Trevor, Madelyn, Kelsey, Lake and Hudson and many nieces and nephews. Friends and family are invited to visit at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. west of Corey Rd. on Tuesday from 4-8:00 PM. There will be visitation on Wednesday at the funeral home from 10 am until the service at 11 am. Rev. Stephen Sparks from First Baptist Church in Temperance, MI. will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a contribution in Donalds name are asked to consider the Cathy McClain Nursing Scholarship Fund with checks made payable to the Doddridge County Community Foundation, P.O. Box 92, West Union, W.V. 26456.
