Donald Nielsen

June 13, 1922 — January 25, 2014

Our Dad, Donald Nielsen, age 91, passed away on January 25, 2014 at Firelands Hospital, Sandusky, OH. He was born June 13, 1922 in Valparaiso, IN to Jennie Haslund and N. William Nielsen who preceded him in death along with 8 siblings. Dad attended Valparaiso University, Purdue University where he attained a chemical engineering degree, and later the US Naval Academy. He served as a LTJG aboard the cruiser USS Louisville during the final days of WWII. He was a long time resident of Port Clinton and retired from the US Gypsum Company where he worked as Paper Mill Superintendent. Don loved life and was constantly on the go. He enjoyed the Plaids and Calicos Square Dance group with his wife Nancy who died in 1992. He later enjoyed spending time with his good friend Ellie Farrell round dancing at various Senior Centers. Don was a life member of the Port Clinton Elks Lodge, where he was secretary treasurer of the bowling league. He was also a long time Red Cross bloodmobile volunteer. Well always remember Dad wearing bolo ties to square dance, red socks throughout the month of December, and for making the Danish klejner cookies for our Christmas eve family gatherings. He was rarely seen without his trusty crossword puzzles. Don will be missed by his children Jay Janet of Monclova Township, Jim Jan of Bowling Green, Jon Yong Cha of Fremont, Jan Mark Moskal and Joy Whiting, both of Port Clinton, as well as 10 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Our family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff of 2-North of The Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky for the wonderful care our Dad received while a resident there. In lieu of flowers please honor our surviving veterans with a memorial contribution to The Ohio Veterans Home Activities Fund, 3416 Columbus Ave, Sandusky, OH 44870 or The American Red Cross. Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 from 4-7 p.m. at the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home Crematory, Port Clinton where funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., on Thursday, January 30, 2014. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Port Clinton with military graveside honors.
