Donald A. Magly

March 24, 1932 — May 22, 2025

Donald A. Magly passed away May 22 after suffering his second stroke this year. After his first stroke in January, he recovered well enough to live independently at Glass Peaks Senior Living. Prior to that he lived in his own home – a testament to his life-long practice of exercise and good health habits.

Don was born in Toledo March 24, 1932 to Donald C. and Maxine (Mundwiler) Magly. Most of his childhood was spent in Point Place where he enjoyed sailing and ice sailing. He attended Waite High School where he played baseball and graduated in 1950.

Don enlisted in the Navy and trained as an airport control operator. He served at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida where he had the honor of guiding the Blue Angels into the base and flying with them as a guest rider. He returned to Toledo and attended UT and taught ballroom dancing at Fred Astaire and Arthur Murray studios. After receiving his degree in business administration, he worked for Owens Illinois and the DeVilbiss Company. He finished his working career by teaching marketing at Owens Community College.

He married Doris Businger in 1958 and they taught ballroom dancing at various places in Toledo, including the Sun Oil Recreation. In his retirement they enjoyed trips to Florida and California. Don was also an avid golfer with a low handicap, and scored a hole in one at a Waite High School golf outing while in his 70s.

He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Johnson; grandchildren Zachary Johnson (Amy), Valarie St. John (Jennifer), Carly Hess (Marty); great grandchildren Jordan, Riley, Hazel, and Nirvan; son- in-law Ed Johnson; and his long-time friend and dance partner, Jeannette Lubinski.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, his son, Richard Magly, and sister Marilyn Thorsby.

An evening to celebrate his life will be held on Monday, June 23, from 4 to 7pm at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. Internment will be Tuesday, June 24, at Toledo Memorial Park at 10am for the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to WGTE Public Media: P.O. Box 30, Toledo, Ohio 43614.
