Donald L. Jurek of Toledo, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Toledo. Don was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was associated with Charter One Bank, formerly Peoples Savings Association for over 35 years, retiring in 2001. He served as Manager of the Lewis Avenue, Oregon, and Westgate branches. He later became one of Charter One Banks leading Senior Loan Representatives. Don was a member of St. Catherine Parish for over 62 years, where he served as an usher for many years. Don served several terms on the St. Catherine School Board, and had also served on the Finance Committee of his Parish. He then became a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. Don was involved in other community activities, serving as a volunteer for the American Red Cross, where his most memorable experience was working at a command post through the blizzard of 1978. Through Charter One Bank, he was active in the Junior Achievement program, and also with schools serving underprivileged children. Don was a basketball standout at Central Catholic High School and continued his interest in high school athletics by volunteering his time at St. Francis DeSales High School as a member of the Knights of the Round Table. Don graduated from the University of Toledo in 1960 and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Don was born on February 5, 1938 to his mother, Pearl and his father, Vitus Pitt Jurek, both of whom preceded him in death. Don was also preceded in death by his wife, Joanne, and brothers-in-law James and Martin. He is survived by his sons, Christopher, Michael Michele and D.J. Jill; and his grandchildren Kristin, Alexander, Benjamin, Megan, Margaret Maggie and Josephine Josie His sister, Marcia James McDaniel, also survives along with his brother-in-law Daniel Judy, and sisters-in-law Kathryn Daniel Dever, Barbara Mahoney, and Katherine Mahoney. Don also leaves many special friends, cousins, nieces and nephews. Dons greatest treasure in life was his family. He was a true gentle man. The legacy he leaves is one of honesty and loyalty, and a work ethic that fills his family with pride! Friends may visit from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday, in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. west of Corey Rd. where a scripture service will be held at 7 p.m. followed by a sharing of memories. Prayers will begin at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, from the funeral home and continue with the Mass of Christian Burial in Christ the King Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Memorials would be appreciated to Christ the King Catholic Church, Central Catholic High School, or St. Francis DeSales High School. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff, volunteers, and Sam the therapy dog at Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
