Donald Ferdinand Homier, age 88, of Toledo’s Point Place Community, passed away December 22, 2023, at Fremont Memorial Hospital. He was born July 18, 1935, in Toledo, OH to Harold and Margaret (Blazey) Homier.
Devout in his catholic faith, he was enrolled in seminary studies at Epiphany Apostolic College in Newburgh, NY during the 1950’s. He was a parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where he attended mass faithfully.
A veteran of the US Army, Don was stationed at Ft Still, OK as a command records management specialist. Following his military service, he worked for a bank as a loan interviewer and manager of the premium finance division.
An extremely educated and intelligent individual, Don earned his doctorate in Medieval Literature from Northern Illinois University. He always had a thirst for knowledge and spent 15 years studying Latin. Don dedicated his career to educating and nurturing young minds. He taught students of all ages from elementary through university. The youngest students Don taught were at St. John the Baptist Elementary School. At the university level he taught English at Marietta College, Northern Illinois University, Urbana University, and University of Toledo. During is tenure at the University of Toledo Don held several positions that included managing the writing lab at the Medical College, chairing the honors program in literature, as well as being an undergraduate academic advisor for the College of Arts and Science.
He was a published author in several academic publications and wrote multiple manuscripts. Don was a talented artist and in his younger years enjoyed oil painting. In later years he would create intricate cross stitch creations. He also enjoyed puzzle books and adult coloring books.
Family and friends may visit Friday, December 29, 2023, from 9-10 am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 5153 N. Summit St. The Funeral Mass will follow at 10 am. Donald will be laid to rest in Springfield Township Cemetery.
