Donald H. Gulau, 99, of Port Clinton, Ohio, passed away Friday, March 13, 2026, at Genoa Care and Rehabilitation Center in Genoa, Ohio. He was born March 27, 1926, in Danbury Township, Ohio, to Melvin and Florence (Wahlers) Gulau.
On May 16, 1953, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oak Harbor, Ohio, he married Miriam "Mitzi" D. Genzman, and she preceded him in death on August 24, 2023.
Donald proudly served his country in the United States Navy with the 7th Amphibious Squadron during World War II from 1944 to 1946. Following his military service, he worked as an electrician for A.T. Emmett in Port Clinton for 22 years, retiring in 1986. Prior to that, he worked as a mechanic at Gem Beach Marina.
He was a member of the Port Clinton V.F.W., Port Clinton Elks Lodge, Ducks Unlimited, and the National Rifle Association, and was also a past member of the Catawba Island Volunteer Fire Department.
Donald had a deep love for Lake Erie and the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and served for many years as a charter boat captain aboard his boat, The Marshall. He also enjoyed guiding ice fishing trips, snowmobiling, and hunting, with perch fishing being his favorite pastime. Donald was known as an excellent cook and enjoyed hosting barbecues for family and friends. He also loved gardening and was known as someone who could repair almost anything. Above all, he was proud of his roots and his community in Catawba.
Donald is survived by his daughter, Kathy Lynn (Rod) Wiechman-Schling; grandson, Alex H. (Kay Dew) Wiechman; great-grandchildren, Charlie H. Wiechman, Callie R. Wiechman, and Carter L. Wiechman; special great-granddaughter, Garina Minton; and sister, Betty Easton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Miriam; infant son, Richard Wayne Gulau; and son-in-law, Jerry Wiechman.
Memorial services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 2370 NE Catawba Rd., Port Clinton, Ohio, with visitation at the church one hour prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.
Memorial contributions in memory of Donald may be made to Resurrection Lutheran Church, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, or the Catawba Island Volunteer Fire Department.
