Donald James Gedert

Donald “Don” James Gedert, 93, of Toledo, passed away on Monday, January 31, 2022, at his home. He was born in Toledo to Martin and Vera (Burkhart) Gedert on November 14, 1928.  Don graduated from Macomber High School and worked for over 30 years for GM Powertrain Toledo before retirement.  Don proudly served two tours of duty in the US Army during WWII and the Korean War. He married his sweetheart, Henrietta (Boyer) Gedert, in 1953 and together they raised five wonderful children. Don’s family and friends meant the world to him, and he enjoyed every minute spent with each one of them. He was always there for the whole family, never missing any event that was important to them. He enjoyed playing golf and going fishing in addition to supporting his favorite teams, Notre Dame Football, Toledo Walleye, Toledo Mud Hens, Detroit Red Wings, Cleveland Browns and Indians. Don could always be counted on to share a meaningful or funny story. He was an extremely loyal, friendly, kind, hardworking man who will be greatly missed.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Henrietta; children, Timothy (Teena) Gedert, Diane (Douglas) Chrismer, Carol Gedert, Christopher (Cynthia) Gedert, Mark (Julie) Gedert; grandchildren, Katie, Sarah (Aaron) Meller, Emily (Jim) Baumgartner, Joshua, Andrew, Alexander; great-grandchildren, Amelia and Savannah Meller; brother, Robert Shaw; many nieces and nephews and special friends Budd Greathouse and Bob Vernon. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.

Friends will be received on Monday, February 7, 2022, from 2-7 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Avenue, Toledo, where a Scripture Service will take place at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 104 W. Broadway Street, Maumee, until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. with Father Eric Schild presiding. Burial will be private at Resurrection Cemetery in Toledo. The family requests masks be worn. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Whitehouse American Legion 384 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
