Donald Best, 90, most recently of Waterville, OH, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2018. Don was born to Otto and Lucille (Keeler) Best on February 11, 1928 in Marietta, OH. The family relocated to Columbus, OH, where Don spent his youth and graduated from West High School. Don was also a graduate of Marietta College where he met his future bride, Dorothy Wright Hudson. They were married on February 21, 1953 in Heinz Chapel on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh where Dorothy had completed her degree. They started their family in Columbus, OH after Don’s service in the army. A natural salesman, Don started his own business in Columbus: The Best Insurance Agency. As he grew in his career, Don eventually became president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Ohio, a role that allowed him to travel the state, working with other leaders in the industry and government. Don was also active in Columbus in service groups such as Hilltop Kiwanis and the Masonic Lodge. Don and Dot always enjoyed family weekends at their cottage on Buckeye Lake and eventually moved to Harbor Hills on the lake full time. During this period, the couple loved their leisure time as members of Buckeye Lake Yacht Club and Harbor Hills Country Club. They spent many years as members of Hebron United Methodist Church. Don and Dot also resided at different times in Sarasota and Bradenton, FL where they were members of Palm Aire Country Club and First United Methodist Church of Sarasota. During these years, they also spent time in Ohio to be with family while maintaining a home in Stone Oak and a membership at Epworth United Methodist Church. Don leaves behind his beloved wife, Dorothy, as well as daughter, Karen (Bruce) Schoenberger and sons, John and Wayne Best. Grandchildren Rachel and Aaron Best and Scott and Nicole Schoenberger also survive as well as cousins. Friends and family will be received at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 15 at Epworth United Methodist Church, 4855 Central Ave., Toledo, OH, 43615. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. for those who wish to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Epworth United Methodist Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.
