Don Wineland passed away on November 12, 2022 in Charlotte, NC. Don was born on June 17, 1958 in Toledo, Ohio, the fifth of six children born to Jack and Margaret (Frahn) Wineland.
Don attended Macomber High School. He joined the Navy in 1975 and served six years as an engineer on the USS St Louis 116 and went on two Westpacs. When he got out of the Navy, he was a stationary engineer for Exxon in Houston.
Don held many jobs in his lifetime including auto mechanics and furniture assembly. He was the ultimate fan of Nascar -- #3. He was a favorite “funcle” among his many nieces and nephews, and was a dad/mentor figure to Steven and Dustin. Annie and Katie thought of him as a grandpa. His good nature and fun-loving spirit will always be remembered
Don most assuredly adored his two sons, Zachery, Houston, TX, and Cody, Charlotte, NC. They were the light of his life and center of his universe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack (d. 12/21) and Margaret (d. 12/16); his brother, Dale; sister, Debra Taylor; and brother-in-law, Darryl Kroggel.
Don is survived by sons, Zachery and Cody; step-daughters Shannon and Angie; brother, Dewey (Marsha), and sisters, Diane (Thomas) Hoover and Amy Kroggel, sister-in-law, Maureen (Dale), and brother-in-law, Thomas (Debra) Taylor.
Friends will be received on Monday, November 21, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. -6:00 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Avenue, Toledo, OH 43623, where a Memorial Service will begin at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Don’s Tribute Fund on this page to assist his family with funeral costs.
