Dolores Almester passed away peacefully on June 13, 2023 surrounded by her loving
family. Dolores spent most of her life in Whitehouse, Ohio. She eventually became a
snowbird enjoying her winters in Ft. Meyrs Beach, FL. Dolores was an avid baker,
earning the nickname "Sugar Pusher" from her son-in-law Eric. She was also known for
making the infamous Almester Belgian Waffle cookies at all family gatherings. She had
a love for scrapbooking and spent numerous hours creating amazing scrapbooks for all
of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dolores was active in many local organizations including the Community of Christ
Lutheran Church in Whitehouse, Ohio, the Maumee River Yacht club where she was
past president and held many titles throughout the years, a charter member and
president of the Maumee River International Satin Gavel, a member of The American
Legion Ladies Auxiliary #0384, and was the first female member of the Maumee Elks
#1850. Over the years she enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren play sports.
On Friday nights during Anthony Wayne football season, you could always find her in
the stands cheering on the football team and watching the band. She loved AW sports
and became a booster member and was the secretary for 2 years.
Dolores was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother "GIGI”, partner, and
friend to all that knew her. She is survived by her children Michael Katich (LeAnn),
Timothy Katich, Amy (Eric) Almester Thompson, Frank Almester (Lisa), grandchildren;
Kris Koval, Kelsey Katich, Samantha, Frank, and Grace Almester, great-grandchildren
(always referring to her as GiGi); Kristopher Jr and Bridgette, sister; Helen Shekeruk.
She is also survived by her loving partner of 22 years Floyd "Butch" Johnston, who took
amazing care of her and was always by her side. Dolores is preceded in death by her
parents, Burl and Marie Kirkendall and her brother Burl Kirkendall.
We would like to give a special thank you to Butch for always taking care of our mother
and always being someone she could count on, especially these last few years. We
also thank the outstanding palliative care team and ICU Nurse Mellissa at The Toledo
Hospital. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation in her honor be made to St.
Jude’s Children's Hospital or Florida Pointer Rescue of New Smyrna Beach, FL.
