JOHN “DOC” RICHARDS THOMAS John “Doc” Richards Thomas, 87, passed away Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Doc was born August 23, 1931 in Barnesville, Ohio to John Floyd and Nancy Marguerite (Dinsdale) Thomas. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1949. Doc proudly served our country in the United States Navy. He earned his Physical Education Degree from Muskingum University in 1959. Doc married Ann Hill on August 1, 1959 in Charleroi, Pennsylvania and together they shared 59 years together. Doc worked as a Perrysburg High School gym teacher for over 36 years, retiring in 1995. He was an assistant football coach for 36 years, earning his nick name “Doc,” as well as the head basketball coach for 9 years, and assistant girls’ basketball coach for a while. Doc was inducted into the Perrysburg High School Coaches Hall of Fame on February 19, 1999. After 36 years of being the trainer, Doc was honored by having the Perrysburg Athletic Training Room named after him. He was an avid Ohio State fan and enjoyed playing golf. He went on the Flag City Honor Flight with his daughter on June 7, 2017 and he was extremely proud of this. Along with his wife, Ann, Doc is survived by his children, John R. (Kelli) Thomas, Jr. and Kristen (Ron) Lindeen; four grandchildren, Cassi, Aaron, Abbi and Jack and three great-grandchildren, Alivia, Ava and Conrad. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, George and sister, Betty Jo Wilson. Friends will be received Friday, October 26, 2018 from 2-8 P.M. at Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, 222 E. South Boundary Street, Perrysburg (419-874-3133). Visitation will continue Saturday, October 27, 2018 from 10-11 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church, 200 E. Broadway Street, Maumee, Ohio, 43537 where a Memorial Service will begin at 11 A.M. with Pastor Clint Tolbert, officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Meigs Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Doc’s name to the Flag City Honor Flight, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg, The First Presbyterian Church or The Donor’s Choice.
