Denny was born on September 30, 1927, in Weston, WV, to his loving parents, Arling and Maude. Along with his older brother, Gordon who preceded him in death, he had a fun and adventuresome childhood. He enjoyed sharing stories of his childhood to his three grandchildren, who always enjoyed hearing them. After graduation from high school in Weston, he moved to Toledo to co-own and operate a Pure Oil service station along with his brother who previously opened it.
