Demetra Karas

Demetra Karas, age 90, passed away peacefully at Sunset House on Sunday, August 7, 2011. She was the daughter of George and Politimi Rovatsos Thorakos, born on December 2, 1920 in New York City, NY. Demetra was a homemaker and she also assisted her husband in the family business, Syosset Hardware Store on Long Island, NY. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, Jigsaw puzzles, entertaining family and friends and was an avid traveler. She loved to cheer on her great-grandson at his sporting events. Demetra was a member of The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Toledo and was in the Young at Heart Senior Group. She was a longtime member of St. Pauls Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Hempstead, NY. Demetra will be remembered as a loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother. Mrs. Karas was preceded in death by her loving husband of thirty-five years, Peter Karas; brother, Thomas Thorakos; and sisters, Lilly Vroulets and Helen Chion. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Paul Karas Sieben and Paulette Karas; grandchildren, Stephanie, Stacy, and Sandy Sieben; great-grandson, Hunter Sieben; brother, Jimmy Thorakos and sister, Maria Dan Poulos. Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 9, from 4 to 8 PM with Trisagion Prayers at 7PM at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave., west of Corey Rd. Funeral services will take place at 11 AM, Wednesday, August 10, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral with Father Aristotle Damaskos presiding. A luncheon will immediately follow in the church hall. Additional services and burial will take place in Hempstead, NY.
