Deborah Lynn Horner, age 58 of Sylvania passed away Saturday, December 7, 2013 in the Toledo Hospital. She was born December 13, 1954 in Toledo to Joseph and Sara Duty. A 1973 graduate of Bowsher High School, she was homecoming queen her senior year. Debbie then attended Ohio State University and graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics. A Registered and Licensed Dietitian RD, LD she was also a Certified Diabetes Educator CDE. Debbie worked as a Pediatric Metabolic Dietitian for Mercy Hospital, the former Medical College Hospital, and Mercy Childrens Hospital where she retired in November of 2012. An active member of Westgate Chapel, she was a flutist with the church orchestra and a member of one of the churchs community groups, as well as Westgate Women. Debbie was an avid tennis player who also enjoyed cooking, biking and camping. She was a loving wife and mother who was devoted to her entire family. Preceded in death by her parents, step-father Milton Mengel and brother, Jack Duty, she is survived by her husband Dr. James Horner; sons David Drafts, Joel Romero, and Stephen Horner; daughters Elizabeth Paul Birkinbine and Jennifer Matthew Patton; grandchildren Jolie OBrien and Kelsey Birkinbine; beloved pets Pete and Andre; brothers Joseph Maggie Duty II, James Beverly Duty and William Lynn Duty; sister Diane Jules Winkler; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Walker Funeral Home 5155 Sylvania Ave. west of Corey on Monday from 6-8 PM and Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 AM in Westgate Chapel 2500 Wilford Rd. Toledo where visitation will be one hour prior. Interment will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. The family suggests memorials to a charity of the donors choice.
