David J. Walrod, age 76, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and friends on August 29, 2023. A lifelong resident of the Toledo area, David graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School, where he later served on the board for almost 30 years. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Toledo.
David’s first occupation was working as a bag boy at Seaway Food Town grocery store when he was 16 years old to fill in for his brother who broke his leg. He immersed himself into his career and he worked his way up through various positions, ultimately serving as COO at Food Town. He was passionate about his work and spent nearly 40 years growing this organization into a local fixture in Northwest Ohio. However, David’s vocation was serving others. Through connections made at Food Town, David became very involved in his community and served on over 20 boards, including the Northwest Ohio Foodbank, Junior Achievement, the Toledo Mud Hens, Mercy Healthcare Partners and St. Francis de Sales High School. He was also board chairman for St. Joseph’s School, the Bishops Education Council for the Diocese of Toledo, the Knight Academy, and multiple Taft/Hartley UFCW Health/Welfare and Pension boards. David was also a very proud Eagle Scout.
What was even more important to David, however, was his family. He married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Judy, in 1968. They celebrated their 55th anniversary just last week. Together they raised three children. David loved to travel, and took trips with Judy to Hawaii, Alaska, and Europe. His children have fond memories of vacationing in Traverse City every year in December for the holidays. David loved spending time outdoors, whether that meant fishing in his back yard or Lake Erie. He also really enjoyed captaining his boat on the Maumee River and Lake Erie as well as golfing at Belmont country club and snowmobiling with his kids in Michigan.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Maynard and Isabelle Walrod; and his son, David M. Walrod. He is survived by his wife, Judy Walrod; daughter-in-law, Lynne Walrod; sons, Bryant (Norah) Walrod, Marc (Kim) Walrod; and grandchildren; Jacob, Scarlett, Caitlyn, and Brandon.
