David Edward Scherting

February 6, 1957 — April 26, 2024

David Scherting, age 67, of Waterville, Ohio died peacefully on Friday, April 26, 2024, at the Toledo Hospital. He was born February 6, 1957, in Toledo to the late Harry and Grace (Mohr) Scherting and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1975.

While a Sophomore at Central, Dave met his future bride, Peggy Halleron, and the couple married on June 16, 1979. They lived 34 wonderful years together before Peggy’s passing in 2013. Dave visited Peggy’s grave every day and missed her dearly. There is consolation in the knowledge that they are again united.

Dave earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing and finance from the University of Toledo in 1987. He went on to a more than 40-year career in information technology, just retiring on March 31 from Lucas County Children’s Services. He spent much of his time as the director of IT at the former Foodtown stores, a job he always loved.

In his free time, Dave was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed cheering on his Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Aside from watching sports, Dave enjoyed coaching various CYO sports teams. Dave will be remembered for his keen sense of humor and his charitable, giving nature. He was sociable and outgoing and never knew a stranger, making friends wherever he went. Dave found his greatest joy in spending time with his family; particularly watching his beloved grandchildren.

Colin, Eloise and Magnolia were the light of Dave’s life. He could be seen sitting in the driveway for hours just watching them play. He enjoyed sending them random Amazon packages, bringing over scratch off lottery tickets for the kids to help him scratch (even though he already scanned the bar code and knew which were winners) and had plenty of snacks for Eloise to eat in his car. He relished his time picking up Colin from school and often would take him to visit Peggy at the cemetery, taking their chocolate shakes from McDonalds along with them. You can often hear Colin singing “Mamas don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys” – a song Dave has sung to all the kids since they were born.

Left to cherish Dave’s memory are his children, Andrew Scherting (Lindsey) and daughter, Anna Scherting (fiancé, Angelo Dechellis); siblings, Mary Busdicker (Chuck), Sandra Godrey, Joe Scherting, Steve Scherting (Cindy), Cindy Cappandora (fiancé, Daniel Vasquesz), Marcia Gentry (Beau), and Jeff Scherting (Robin); brother-in-law, Scott Woodson; many other in-laws who Dave loved like his own; and a large group of dear friends. He was also preceded in death by siblings Beth Woodson and John Scherting; niece, Samantha; and nephew, Adam.
