David J. McFarland, age 73, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2025.
Born to Harold and Rose McFarland, Dave was a proud 1971 graduate of Whitmer High School. Shortly after, he answered the call to serve his country in the U.S. Navy, where he spent nine years as a commissary man in an air anti-submarine warfare squadron. His culinary talents—cooking, butchering, baking, and provisioning—were honed during his service and remained a lifelong passion. Dave loved sharing his knowledge and techniques with others, always eager to teach and connect through food.
After his military service, Dave dedicated 32 years to GM Powertrain, where he worked as a committeeman and quality inspector. He was known for his integrity, diligence, and camaraderie among colleagues.
Dave’s interests were as vibrant as his personality. He found joy in art, photography, scuba diving, and collecting. But above all, he was a people person—friendly, generous, and deeply thoughtful. He never met a stranger; everyone he encountered became a friend. Conversations with Dave often ran deep, filled with curiosity, warmth, and faith.
A man of strong spiritual conviction, Dave spoke often and joyfully about his future in heaven. His faith was a guiding light in his life and a comfort to those who knew him.
He is survived by his loving brother Dan (Vickie) McFarland and sister Diana (Dan) Overfield, along with nieces and nephews whom he cherished dearly.
In keeping with Dave’s wishes, there will be no formal services. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date and shared on Facebook. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David’s memory to the American Heart Association.
