David D. Kennedy

December 15, 1952 — December 21, 2017

Our brother, David D. Kennedy, passed on December 21, 2017 of natural causes. He will be missed by all who knew him. Affectionately nicknamed DD, he was a beloved brother, fun uncle, and trusted advisor to his family. He was a lifelong resident of Northwest Ohio. In the early 1990s he moved to Curtis, Ohio and lived in his childhood summer home, the Cottage, near Meinke Marina on the shores of Lake Erie. He attended St. Jude Catholic School in Toledo, Ohio for grade school. He attended Anthony Wayne High School his freshman and sophomore years (1967-1968). He was a letterman on the AWHS Track team and in the Spanish Club. He transferred to Fishburne Military Academy in Waynesboro, Virginia and because he was fluent in Spanish, his roommates were international students who were learning English. He graduated from FMA in May 1970. He studied Spanish at University of Toledo and initially aspired to be an interpreter for United Nations but when he learned the pay structure, he abandoned that dream. With the assistance of his father, David L. Kennedy, DD decided to pursue patternmaking. He began his career at Schill Pattern Company in Toledo, Ohio. While at Schill he earned his master pattern maker certification. After 15 years at Schill, he took a position with Chrysler Corporation at the Toledo Jeep facility in the Quality Control Department. After nearly 30 years, he retired from Jeep in 2016. At Jeep, he became a member of the UAW. DD had a playful sense of humor and enjoyed playing practical jokes. He liked boating and fishing on Lake Erie. He was a member of the Toledo Sailing Club and Harborview Yacht Club. He was active in the euchre tournaments at both clubs. He was a softball coach for the Monclova Youth intramural league and coached his younger sisters Angela and Tricia. He enjoyed target shooting. He loved to travel and toured Europe and the islands regularly. He visited Las Vegas every year for over 30 years with his friends Gary and Shirley Kodelman — DD, Patsy, Gary, and Shirley returned from the 2017 Annual Vegas trip about a week before he passed away. He dealt Blackjack just like his maternal Grandfather, Duane Post. In early December, he hosted his family for a Thanksgiving and Christmas celebration, respectfully nicknamed The Christ-giving Celebration, at the Cottage in Curtis, Ohio. His brothers and sisters enjoyed returning to the family summer home and reminiscing about memories and seeing the home improvements DD completed since retiring from Jeep. DD generously gifted his family as usual and the 2017 gifts were especially sentimental. Survived by his siblings Anna Kennedy Rohloff, Angela Kennedy Scardina (David), Stephen A. Kennedy (Mary Ann), and Tricia Kennedy. He is also survived by nieces and nephews Alexa R. Dennis, Margeaux J. Dennis, David M. Kennedy, and Nicholas A. Kennedy. He will be sadly missed by dear friend and travel companion, Patsy Williams. McKenzie Bailey had a special place in DD’s heart. DD was preceded in death by his parents, David L. Kennedy and Suzanne Post Kennedy, and brother-in-law Marc D. Rohloff. Family and friends will be received at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant St., Maumee, OH on Thursday, December 28, 2017 from 4:00-8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday, December 29, 2017 at 11:00 AM. followed by interment at Roth Memorial Cemetery, Monclova, OH. Memorial contributions may be made to the Monclova Historical Foundation 8115 Monclova Rd, Monclova, OH 43542. Online condolences may be shared at walkerfuneralhomes.com
