David B. Gardner, affectionately known as "Dave" and proudly called "Poppa" by his grandchildren, passed away peacefully at home on July 4, 2026, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 81 years old.

Dave was born in East Hampton, Connecticut, to the late Norman H. Gardner and Elizabeth (McKenzie) Gardner. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1970 with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science.

Following college, Dave began his career in sales within the automotive supplier industry. Through hard work, integrity, and natural leadership, he advanced to become President of a division based in Milan, Ohio, where he served until his retirement in 2000.

In 1969, Dave married Randy Sue Zimmer, and together they welcomed two daughters, Sarah and Amy. In 2000, he married Cindy (Persons), and proudly welcomed her son, Alan Pittman, into the family.

To know Dave was to know a storyteller. He could captivate any audience with tales from his childhood growing up in Connecticut, often leaving everyone laughing and wanting to hear just one more. A born leader, Dave naturally stepped into the role of organizer, captain, or guide in nearly every situation. Whether with family, friends, or colleagues, people looked to him for direction, wisdom, and confidence.

Dave's happiest moments were spent on the water aboard a sailboat, where he was, of course, the captain. He also had a lifelong passion for travel, antique automobiles, and car shows. He loved listening to music, savoring a well-made Manhattan, and never missed an opportunity to talk proudly-and in great detail-about the accomplishments and activities of his beloved grandchildren.

Perhaps Dave's greatest gift was his ability to connect with people. He never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone. A true gentleman through and through, he will be remembered for his unforgettable stories, his famously brief phone conversations, his signature smirk, and the warmth and kindness he extended to everyone he met.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Norman H. and Elizabeth Gardner; and his brother, Norman Jr.

He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Cindy Gardner; his children, Sarah Prunoske (John), Amy Bennett (Kevin), and Alan Pittman (Jennifer); his cherished grandchildren, Alex, Aiden, Carolyn, CJ, Gavin, Connor, and Drake; and sisters, Cynthia Bevin and Sherry Meyer. He also leaves behind many extended family members, dear friends, and countless lives made richer by his friendship, guidance, and humor.

In accordance with Dave's wishes, there will be no immediate formal services.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the Autism Alliance of Michigan at autismallianceofmichigan.org, in honor of Dave's memory and legacy of caring for others.
